20th Century Society posting about Lambeth Council’s decision to freeze plans to restore Kennington Bowl. Petition to reverse the decision here: Petition · Save Kennington Skatebowl from the cuts! - Vereinigtes Königreich · Change.org
Only skated it once over 10 years ago, after Converse(?) had had a go at restoring it partly. Was still hard work to skate then.
By the sounds of it, there’s no money for the restoration and essential council services are struggling. Not sure what could be done.
Photos in this, plus the b/s flip response to early skate stop architecture (in the Agah’s too)
Noticed in comments that someone mentioned this was filmed there in the 80s…
Enjoyed the Pritchard vid earlier, pretty cool.
Southbank Grade II listed, has taken a while…
Just about to post that! Pretty criminal that it took so long - could it have avoided the damage to the original Undercroft if it had happened earlier?
From Historic England:
Carrying out works to a listed building without listed building consent is a criminal offence. It may also be necessary to apply for planning permission in addition to listed building consent in order to carry out works to a listed building.
..so I think so, alterations to the site would have needed to be approved - a shame. I assume the current layout is as far as the Undercroft will be “put back”, in terms of skateable space
lol at the skate photo used
of all the photos taken there across the decades : (
Maybe it’s an invitation for angle grinders.
