Jacob Silverman wrote a great piece on this very thing in the FT a few weekends back in their weekend magazine.

I think almost everyone on here is also old enough to remember when the internet was really fucking cool and interesting. I’m sure things will come around again in some way - after all - aren’t cool younger people into ‘retro’ late 90s/early 00s again (i.e. using digital cameras and listening to Pavement)?
As it happens, even the inception of Twitter was actually quite fun and innocuous compared to what it has become - it seemed to originally be used for parties so people could connect and be like “we’re drinking here at X, with Y, at Z…”
