Dune - any good? Never watched the 84 version nor read the book(s?), I just like scifi.

If there’s one book that all other sci-fi could be measured against, it’s Dune. It’s fucking amazing.
Haven’t seen the film yet but I’m really hyped for it. I really hope it’s good.

the '84 film sadly isn’t worth watching.

It’s relevant today too, Spice is rife up in Derby!

I have fond memories of Dune but the reality is painfully dull.

Don’t think I’ve actually finished the original film even after starting it numerous times.
Didn’t finish the book either.
Looking forward to the new one because Villneuve can do no wrong.

The problem is, the Lynch film is just a total mess.
I only saw it yesterday and was blown away by how much of a mess it really is.

There is zero subtext yet so much exposition. They literally voice over at every opportunity.
I was with a friend and said “I bet this film had some crazy cuts and they had to add in the voice overs after” and sure enough…that is exactly what happened.

Apparently the Villneuve film covers only the first third of the book which to me makes sense (although I’ve never read the book) as the 135 min cut I watched yesterday tried to pack soooo much in that at points, you were just left totally lost. Characters are barely introduced but all of a sudden are meant to be main protagonists. Or plot ideas are laid down only for you to never hear a thing about them again.

Weird.

I got that Jodorowskis Dune doc to watch later…
🙂

I watched it in 4 parts as our boy has been pretty ill over the last few days, so I didn’t really get into it properly.
It seemed like one of those films that needs full attention, and I didn’t give it that… plus I was really tired and a lot of the film is very dimly lit which didn’t help.

I’ll try again and report back. But from what I do remember, it looked stunning and I really liked the atmosphere.

The Guilty with Gake Jyllenhall is decent too. He never leaves a room for the whole film but still tense as. Like Locke which is Tom Hardy in the front seat of a Volvo for 90 minutes.

This was way better than expected. Love Jake.

Had the house to myself this weekend so been on a sci-fi binge because I never get to do that. Interstellar, Arrival, now just settling down to Gattaca with a glass of whiskey. Seen them all before but they’re all so good.

Interstellar.

The unofficial trilogy of Matt Damon getting rescued from further and further away.
Also something like Dunkirk, Saving Private Ryan and Fury, or Cabin In The Woods, Cloverfield and Pacific Rim.

There’s a killer thread on Reddit about unofficial trilogies like that, definitely worth dipping into - [https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/pzgv4i/which\_three\_movies\_should\_be\_watched\_together\_as/](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/pzgv4i/which_three_movies_should_be_watched_together_as/)

New Bond is great. I deliberately haven’t read any reviews so not sure of the overall consensus, but for me it’s probably the Bond I’ve enjoyed most since Casino Royale.

If I had one criticism it’d be that there wasn’t really enough of Rami Malik’s bad guy - I think it needed a bit more to flesh out his motivations. But overall, pretty enjoyable I thought
