Isolating late and abandoning contact tracing early on in an epidemic that was multiplying were massive mistakes that will end up costing thousands of people their lives. I don’t know that it’s Boris’s fault but the buck stops there.
China and Italy were telling Boris he was fucking it up. I think they are countries worth listening to. There wasn’t a clear break down for people to follow, hence the confusion we are still seeing with the public now!
We will have no idea how anyone else would have handled it, plenty of perfectly intelligent people have had very varied opinions over this whole thing especially early on wgen it was so uncertain what we were dealing with. People learn and change their minds, of course, it’s the job of the PM to make the decisions and in the end it’s all on his head but he’s human, even if he’s always shown that he’s a fucking bellend. He’s not as stupid as he makes out either, he’s just sheltered in a certain level of society and life in general but this thing could really change him as a person and a politician. i’m being wildly optimistic though.
A bit of a lol here, I was in the end of the garden pissing about in my smoke shack and lost track of time. I thought the neighbours were banging or the guy was having a wank in the garden under his arbour. I text my wife laughing and stepped out to film the sound, as soon as I stepped out the muffled slap became clear and I knew instantly it was 8pm haha
Look at the responses by South Korea and Vietnam as perfect examples of what to do. Travel bans from China, Italy, etc., widespread testing, isolation, actually doing shit and getting shit done rather than Keep Calm and Carry On, jabbering on about herd immunity which was effectively a policy to just stand about, do nothing and let nature take its course.
Now is the perfect time to be yelling at the thick fuck to get him and the Tories to sort their policies out.
okay i wasn’t going to go there but fuck it

you’re comparing british society with asian societies? seriously? we can’t even attend a football match without causing riots, you think we could handle sustained isolation on the scale of China? Asia has had viruses like SARs kicking around for years, they know how to handle these things. their societies are generally more obedient and certainly more community minded than we are

Boris listened to his science advisors. im sure they took into account the shittiness of the British public when delaying isolation and shutdown for so long. what else was there for him to do?

you’re really shitting on the Tories when Labour have just lost the easiest election in history with their worst leader in a generation? you think that hand-wringing, fence-sitting useless twat Corbyn would’ve been a better leader right now? jog on. he’d still now be trying to decide whether we should close schools
Let’s not forget Boris was still out telling people he was shaking hands not that long ago, as everything was fine. His dad was telling people he was going to the pub still and no-one was stopping him. The police and the public are at logger heads still about movement.
Bollocks to anyones hypothetical if ‘Corbyn was not in charge’ crap, he’s not, Boris is, it’s that simple. Give credit or blame to the person in charge, not some imaginary scenario that can help shift blame on to other people that have no say in it.
fair enough, guess we’ll have fun finding out together then
I love it when people say this as if Boris is some kind of brilliantly competent politician, I’m not particualrly into the idea of slating all those in power now either but people using it as an opportunity for yet more Corbyn bashing is just as bad if not worse.
i brought up Corbyn after some “serves people right for voting Tory” earlier in the thread
181 today. Fuck.
Awful, I really thought things were very slowly starting to level off as well, my word I was wrong there.
i looked at the numbers yesterday and thought the same until i checked back today. i’m hoping the levelling off will start in the next week or so…
If anyone uses telegram and would like to be messaged death rates etc there’s one called @Covid19reporter_bot. If you add it you can subscribe for every time figures are reported to WHO, happens about 3 times a day
Case confirmed here are some of the lowest in the country but our Hospital is pretty good so I’m hearing it’s full of people from other parts of the country (which it should be). Just hoping anyone in and around the area are taking all the safety steps, ect. As you start thinking the worse at times, it’s only natural.
I’ve been hearing some very scary stuff from a mate who is a paramedic. We are in Sheffield, which has one of the highest rates of confirmed infection outside of London, yet he hasn’t seen any serious covid cases and neither has any of his colleagues. They have covid specific ambulances that haven’t been used He also reports that clinical staff in hospitals haven’t got a great deal to do at the moment (obvs this could change drastically in the next couple of weeks). The scary thing is that other critical conditions including cardiac arrest have been downgraded, so every cunt ringing up to say their little jimmy has a bad cough is being prioritised over grand dad who has suddenly keeled over. As such, he predicts there is going to be a big spike in non-covid deaths as they simply won’t receive the treatment in time.
That is scary, but also mildly reassuring. I hope that it doesn’t hit other areas in the same way as the capital, that way if patients are well enough to be moved then the NHS might cope.
My mum and sister work in a hospital (close to Sheffield coincidentally)
2 cases there as of yesterday, they say the hospital is very quiet at the moment because they’ve been sending people home who don’t desperately need to be there. They are preparing for the inevitable influx of people who are going to be infected in the next few weeks.
No one should be bringing up labour in any argument, no point, they are not in power, sadly. We have laid our chips on this bet so we have to back them enough to empower them to do the right thing. Of course the people in charge have not got the history of saints but this is going to test their empathy or even reignite some dormant humanistic values. Is their any real point of bashing and being an armchair “told you so”? If their are holes in any of their plans then do your best to let them know, even if we were late and they all had stupid views initially, lets try and point them right. This virus does not care what class people are in, it affects us all equally. I think politicians are geting that now.
