Love Tintin, collect any weird merch I find too, was obsessed with him, especially the one ‘Cigars of the Pharaoh’ which amazingly for a kids thing is about opium smuggling. There’s also this amazing scene where they’re tripping that used to buzz me up. Maybe Tintin subconsciously got me into psychedelics or the idea of them from an early age haha

The Black Island was re-done twice as Hergé’s English editor said the landscapes in the first editions didn’t look Scottish enough, as HergĂ© had never been to Scotland. He couldn’t go for some reason but Bob de Moor was sent there in order to get good info about Scottish castles and stuff.

Are any of you into Thorgal? I grew up on that and Tintin and Gaston Lagaffe and so many others.

Don’t forget the Magritte Museum!

I’ll second that.

Do you know Sempé too? Amazing cartoonist.

Yes!

I kinda want a Tintin tattoo. Was thinking about getting the stylish O from this album’s title, looks pretty damn cool.

yeah! I used to read Le Petit Nicholas as bedtime stories. Loved his illustrations!
Claude Ponti was another one, he has this recurring character called Blaise who is an anarchist duckling who wears a red devil mask and leads the other ducklings as they tumble around and tickle the sun and stuff.
I was thinking that if I ever get a tattoo it would be Blaise

Sempé is amazing. His covers for the New Yorker are incredible.

Have you seen the bootleg anarchist Tintin book?

I went to a really good Tintin exhibition at Somerset house in London a few years back. By the way the tintin app is very good, you can view all the originals in English or the original French.

I went to that. There was another good one at the National Maritime Museum. Any opportunity to see the original artwork is worth it. There was also a great show at the Bibliothùque Nationale in Paris of Uderzo’s Asterix drawings.

Maybe a comics/graphic novels thread is required? Always looking for any suggestions in the same vein as the books on my shelf.

The only graphic novel i’ve read is Maus after I got it one Xmas, absolutely loved it. Would be keen to read more but it’s hard to know where to start.

Start with Watchmen. I don’t think it can be topped. I’m not a superhero Marvel/DC guy by any stretch but it’s just incredible
so atmospheric, mystical, thought provoking and such a tight story.

Loads of 2000AD stuff is amazing - Judge Dredd, DR and Quinch, Slaine, Rogue Trooper

I really like some Japanese stuff too, there’s one called Uzumaki that stayed with me after reading it. I still think about that book sometimes
disturbed me a bit. Anything by Junji Ito is good. You can read ‘Layers of Fear’ for free online here (Japanese format so read right to left):

Chaboute is incredible too, but they’re mostly stories without words. A bit niche maybe but one of my favourites.

Nice one, I’ll start ticking some of those off. Cheers for the recommendations

Dan Clowes is another big name worth a look - I read all the Eightball comics in the 90s it was one of the first things that got me into graphic novels. Makes me realise I haven’t read Ghost World actualy so I might order that now
