Sorry to pick one random quote from a 53-post discussion, but I thought this was interesting.
One of the best books I have read is called âQueer Londonâ by Matt Houlbrook. He explores male and male love/romance/sex during the early to mid Twentieth Century. Itâs such an authoritative work that I had assumed the authour himself was gay. But he isnât.
You can have opinions about communities/groups youâre not a part of, you just have to be sensitive to the struggles and prejudices they have faced. This requires knowing these groups - in Houlbrookâs case, a massive amount of research.
I think a blanket statement about not being able to comment on something because youâre not a participant is negative and shuts down discussion. I see it too many times nowadays, granted I also see the opposite even more often: ill-informed talking heads sticking their oar into a discussion they know nothing about.
I suppose we could think about skating. Can a non-skater write well about skating? Itâs rare but possible, it requires the authour immersing themselves in the culture which I guess our current news/editorial/comment cycle doesnât allow time for.
