Buy a second hand one over a new one. heavier the better, speed control over changing pullys is a nice option. If you can get one that lets you work on both sides of the head that will give you more options in the long run.
Saying that, the first one I bought was a piece of shit but I got loads of use out of it.
Buy some nice chisels, second hand also might get you more for your money and getting them properly sharp will make it a much nicer experience overall.

Aw man I would love a lathe. One of my ‘must haves’ for our next house is space for a workshop. Saw one on Right move the other day with a preconverted garage, would have been ideal.

Was checking out lathes only a couple days ago. Also apparently stick an old set of wheels in the freezer and lathe them down to a trendy size!

I’ve long gone beyond the point of not having one due to having loads of machinery but it is such a nice thing. A dedicated space to make noise and mess is good for your brain I think

It’s one of those things, buy the best you can afford. A tell tale sign of good over shit is one with a cast iron bed (the rails the tailstock follows). If they’ve put the money into making that properly chances are the rest will be decent. Stay clear of anything with box section or that bolts together,

That’s what I bought years ago as my first and it’s rubbish, you’ll find it rebranded all over the place but the same construction. Worth chucking an extra £100 in and getting something that will last forever.

Yeah, my train of thought exactly. i want something that looks like it was from a school tech area in the 70s, heavy, solid and moulded. that local one looks alright to me.
I just have to work out where i’m going to be doing this messy work.
I already have loads of tools from building a few guitars over the years so it would be ace to get everything in one specific place. hmmm.

Last time I was looking I saw a job advertised with something like ‘weekly team nights out and monthly team building weekends’. Fuck that, I get little enough time to spend with my family and friends I actually like without being dragged into unpaid ‘team building’ bollocks.
But I am notoriously antisocial.
