SOTY thread

He’s wanted it for what, 8 years?

Let he who would not say “I fuckin tre flipped el toro” cast the first stone

Puts into perspective how fucking insane Chris Cole was. That comp was 16 years ago in 2009. He also back 3’d it second try.

Lindsey Robertson heel flip though and that kid(?) who switch backslide flipped it. Was it DJ Audin?

Googled it. DJ Gaudin. Mental.

The way he bs heeled it was actually incredible. One of the best ever tricks done down it

If SOTY can be decided on a single trick… let it go to Frank Gerwer for jumping Wallenberg at 50.

Had no idea what you were referencing.

Googled it, watched the series so far. New best tv program that’s not actually on tv. It’s so good.

Joslin part is fucked. If it was put together better he would win it. Odd so song choice - could have thrown so mad epic music.

The Tre Flip is wild, but 4 billion angles of kills it. He made it look too easy in a way (what a complaint), one fish and one long lens that makes it look the most nuts. The one face on to the right, (slightly bum shot angle) he makes it look like absolutely nothing. 360 flip a 5 stair shit.

Gabbers is the people’s choice so he won’t get it. He’s really grabbed me with that Out There and that part is fucked. But trick to trick against Joslin it’s not close, although spots are fucking grim.

Antonio switch tre and he gets it. Big year for Wallenberg. Hes not my fave but undeniably sick.

TJ is so so dope. Beat cancer and put all of that stuff out. But no cover.

I don’t mind Tom Schar and that part is utterly fucked and he’s had a cover. But not for me.

Jamie Foy is still a shout.

It’s gunna be Scharr or however many R’s are in it

Last min Zion Wright part tomorrow

Zion Wright could cure cancer, bs flip el toro, do a 9000, bring Jake Phelps back from the dead and he still wouldn’t have a hope in hell of winning SOTY.

He did have a full interview a couple of issues ago, though.

I keep turning this over in my head. My shortlist is Scharr, Antonio, TJ, and Joslin.

The company man in me says TJ, obviously.

I think that Joslin riding for zombie-Lakai because ex-SOTY and SF OG, Mike Carroll got screwed out of his company (Over-simplification to make a point, yes) and Thrasher being from SF too will stop Joslin.

Antonio would be the cool choice.

But… if Thrasher were really smart, I think they’d give it to Scharr.
Here’s why:

Skateboarding feels a bit on its arse right now. Shops are closing, people are losing jobs, and cities are so aware of skating that spots are being pre-knobbed before anyone even touches them. And for kids, someone like Foy or Nyjah is almost unrelatable - because who the hell can front k a 22 stair? Plus, skating has basically looked the same for the last 15 years. When else have we had such a long period with so little change in direction?

But what has been happening over that time is that every little town has gotten a dope little park. Or a DIY.

I’m ignoring Olympics here because I don’t want to make this post too long - but Scharr taking it could counter that santisation of skateboarding which the Olympics has possibly done. But thats a whole other post.

So imagine if Thrasher backed a non-Olympian, pads-up, full-show, proper park skater. It might actually shift things. Most of us do have access to a park - that’s where the next generation actually skates.

Maybe I’m just cold and jetlagged and rambling, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about. I’d genuinely like to see Tom Scharr win because I think it could give skateboarding the kick up the arse it needs.

Unless anyone at work is reading. Then I’d like TJ to win, please.

Schaar…

He came second in last year’s Olympics

Schaar has been a member of Team USA since 2019 and won the silver medal in the men’s park skateboarding competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

I do agree with your point about him being an interesting person to give it to.

Chris’ part has currently got over 400k views, which feels like a lot - he’ll definitely have reach outside of ‘core’ skateboarders

Schaar is in second place with 240k views, TJ with 160k and Gabbers with 130k. Antonio with 100k.

418K in 16 hours is actually fucking wild. That’s kinda like normie culture numbers.

I never believe any numbers on YouTube because (from previous experience) I know how easy it is to ‘boost’ (I.e. buy them). Joslin’s could be legit because hucking appeals to non core and El Toro and Wallenberg are mad famous but still - I don’t trust any stats on the internet

Also has 10,000 comments which is maybe more than you’d expect for that many views? Loads of Youtube content has popped up in the wake of the El Toro flip. I think he’s just successfully captured the attention of pretty much everyone in skateboarding. Fair play Joslin.

I want TJ to win it but the response to the Joslin part seems to be on another level altogether.

I don’t think TJ or Joslin will win. Gabriel won’t either.
