Comments on reddit not understanding the scoring. A regular 540 flip lipslide doesn’t deserve anywhere near the scores that Yuto’s nollie tricks were getting. Yuto’s last trick was bananas

This. The finals sort of lacked that ‘Woah, how did he pull that?!” moment that the qualifying events often produced. Felt like the Olympics didn’t provide a great stage for a lot of these skaters to shine, despite them all being comp heads.

Agreed @Dent_Face . As is obvious from my above posts, I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen Street League, so forgive my ignorance on what the normal protocol is and how it compares to the Olympics, but I feel the competition could have been arranged in a way that would have allowed for a more impressive and interesting demonstration of skateboarding. Suggestions include:

Allowing for longer runs (1:25 perhaps?) would have allowed for better and more varied use of the course. Most skaters lacked any diversity or flow in their runs and it felt like 3/4 of the course went ignored. Instead it all looked hurried and unnatural to cram as much into the time.

Larger number of attempts at a run. I think they could have done 4 or 5 runs instead of 2 (such as how gymnastics and long-jump cater to). I imagine it’s really hard to arrive at the course and merely have two one minute attempts to do what you have in mind, then pack it up.

Best trick being measured on different areas of the course instead of just the one which they defaulted to. There looked like room for doing loads of mad shit, but everyone just chucked themselves down the big rail. I feel like many non skaters will see that and not understand the more typical fluidity of skating, and instead construe it as simply jumping down big stuff.

To be fair to Nige he did go straight to Yuto to congratulate him. But then very likely went into a dark room to focus his own board

The daily hate mail has some ‘interesting’ comments about skateboarding. I enjoyed it for what it was and glad Yuto got the Gold.

Course looked like it would have been 60% smaller.

Same old shit ha!
Why ain’t they wearing helmets , men who’ve not grown up , they win for falling over.

I can imagine mums net going ape because of the lack of protection. “We must hound the Olympic committee and insist on helmets because Won’t somebody think of our children “

Haha fucking reading Twitter comments has really put a smile on my face

I finally made it through watching the men’s street. It had its’ moments. Although, on the whole for me, even as a lifelong skateboarder, it was a bit of a struggle to remain enthused.

I’m probably in the minority but, for the most part, I didn’t find it particularly engaging or exciting. It was like watching sport not skating, with it only occasionally sparking any genuine interest from me. I kept thinking, ‘hit pause, watch that Columbo rerun you’ve seen a bunch of times before instead, maybe come back to it later’. I decided to stick it out though.

There were a few times I managed a ‘whoa!’, but most of the time I just had to keep reminding myself that it was skateboarding’s first outing at the Olympics and I was sort of obliged to keep on watching. Undoubtedly there was some top notch skating going down but I couldn’t bring myself to give much of a toss. Kind of boring and stilted with superfluous waffle commentary. This is not what I signed up for. Did not float my boat. Quite frankly not feeling it.

Well it’s finished now anyway. Probably. Back to normal without needing to worry about this for another four years. Or three years if they try to adjust it back.
