It’s funny, living in Jersey, I’ve noticed hanging flags out your window is pretty chill over here. Ahead of the World Cup my neighbour, who is a typically middle class left leaning sort of guy, hung a load of St George cross flags round his house. When I saw it I was like, fuck, that’s a bit strong! But now I realise that over here that just means you support your country’s football team, and not that you’re xenophobe. Crazy.

It always used to be the case here too, and still is to a large extent I think. If I see flags on a car when the football is on my default assumption is “football fan” rather than “flag shagger”.

Yeah, the shaggers have inadvertently ruined the world cup. There’s tons of tatty sad ones half falling off everywhere round here. I hate it. It is only done in bad faith outside of wc

I have to admit, it was quite a nice realisation, that in this (very much shielded) little microcosm, you can be a bit patriotic without being mistaken for a nob head.
