Ukraine and Russia

So Belarus are invading as well now?

This is fucking nuts to see, Liz Truss literally saying she supports Brits travelling to volunteer in a war. Live on the BBC. Never thought I’d see anything like that.

Does that mean we’re at war with Russia?

Hey there Putin!
Stop the shootin’
Use your brain
Don’t hurt Ukraine

That’ll teach him.

We’ve always been at war with Russia

Her poem reminds me of Kevin Eldon’s alter-ego Paul Hamilton.

Putin feeling the squeeze with Sanctions and Ukraine holding their own

Just seen they are to hold some sort of peace talks

I think that’s the serious point here. People thinking it’s all about them - my house price, my social media profile, my virtue-signalling poem - rather than doing something useful to help the people being bombed.

This guy worth a follow if you weren’t already.

He’s a Canadian comedian who likes to satirise the right wing crowd.

Anyway he’s on his way to help in Ukraine.

Rumoured that Putin isn’t vaxxed.

Hopefully he dies of covid.

He’s getting pretty owned isn’t he.

Or as the kids say, he’s taking an L.

Don’t want to speak early though because he’s completely nuts.

Well some of his most vocal supporting oligarchs are starting to ask for peace, seems they don’t want to have holidays in Russia or drive their sports cars on Russian roads.

US immigration lawyers are saying they are overwhelmed with requests from Russian men fleeing with their families, asking if they can get political protection after Putin’s invasion and most likely be conscripted, it also comes as several Russian MPs withdraw their support for the Kremlin following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sounds like they are willing to back Putin until it starts to hurt their bank balances and the free flow of money out of Russia. I’m sure there are a lot of dodgy people in Russia that you don’t want to piss off by taking away their means of laundering money internationally.

BP getting rid of its Russian Oil shares is a pretty big deal.

Can someone explain the Swift thing please?

Someone else can probably explain it in more detail but it acts as a global messaging system for cross border payments. Russian banks would have to find an alternative system for sending and receiving payments if they are excluded.

Only some Russian banks will be hit. So I assume they will just route funds internally to banks that can use it. But it’s a headache for all involved. Also accelerate some kind of wider embrace of crypto.

How’s the mood where you are Spanky?

Well, wife and daughter (I had to look after baby) went to the protest supporting Ukraine in freedom square yesterday, the largest protest since the Soviet era in the 90s, so a pretty fucking big deal.

As Estonia is an ex-Soviet state, it’s obviously on Putin’s list somewhere. Not sure where, but it’s such a small country and has been occupied by Russia so many times before, people are nervous. If Ukraine falls, then who’s next? Latvia/Lithuania/Estonia.

So the mood is wildly supportive of Ukraine, and nervousness of the outcome. Wife has said if it weren’t for our kids she would be on a train to Ukraine to help fight off the Russians. So we are at that kind of level.

Can’t be arsed to read back through thread and not sure if I mentioned it before but we have already started planning what to do if the Russian tanks start showing up at the border
