Videos that changed the game

A lot of brown dickies and chucks being worn too!

I remember missing out on Video Days when it came out and only reading/hearing pros call it their favourite or most influential video of all time until the early 2000s when it got re-released with What If?. I’d seen snippets here and there. I didn’t think it was a bad video but it wasn’t mind blowing.

You can’t say that when you didn’t see it at the time.

His Rookie section in issue 37 came out a year before WFTW.

Not game changing but I like how every Baker vid always had a Boulala section even if he clearly skated for another company. A breath of fresh air, kinda like people repping other companies gear around 94 (MC in Stereo shirts), or MJ filming clips in adidas when he was on Emerica. Pretty far from Hewitt getting the boot from Nike for saying he smoked weed in an interview.

Somebody mentioned Dylan’s Gravis section but I’m pretty sure the first section released as a solo section was Kalis in Mono. Homeboy went to Barca for a minute, got a ton of footage and didn’t want to sit on it, that’s how it started.

If you read that in the review of Video Days back in ‘91 then you’d know for sure that you’d been transported to opposite world.

Which video do you think first brought the concept of bad style to people’s attention?

First one I can think of was The Storm where ‘dirty’ Dave Mayhew got slated even though his tricks were progressive.

Prior to that I can’t remember anyone really calling out stinkers…if they were progressing things it was ok.

And if you watched other skate videos in 1991, you’d have spotted the difference.

It’s a good point because I remember liking loads of progressive skaters only to watch again later and realise they looked shit. The storm definitely highlighted the stink, could it be the Tyrone tre that switched everyones brain on because it was so extreme?

been listening to jazz this afternoon and of course , Jason lee bought style to the table
In a big way . Just beautiful skating and setting standards.
