A timeline of Handrail Skateboarding

Gonz and Natas both did some street handrail at the same time. I forget the name, could google it.

First actual street handrail 5050 - Gonz, 8th St rail, NY. 1987. (According to Puleo - Iā€™m sure he could do something with those numbers to prove it).

10.20min (ish) for the footage.

19:17 raw Gonzo in New York.

Or was it called mondo vision or something?

Edit, just checked, thatā€™s it

Just to be clear - I didnā€™t claim either of those in my text.
Ed was first handrail grind, as far as I am aware. Slide stuff had already been done.

No Natas was the first grind on some handrail I forget the name of. Something Street. Iā€™ve heard that somewhere.

Mike V claims Gonz did it first and he did it right after him but he ollied over the back of the handrail (which most people give to Sheffey as a first).

It definitely wasnā€™t Ed Templeton in 1988.

Is that the same one Mike V is talking about?

The handrail Iā€™m thinking of is the Long Beach Convention Centre one, and as long as I can remember the folklore has been Gonz first boardslide, Natas first 5050, Julien Stranger first frontside boardslide.

Could be bollocks but Iā€™ve believed that for years.

Yes, sounds like it.

Randomly popped up on Insta today.

This guys collection is insane.

Wasnā€™t it this rail?

Thatā€™s from Sick Boys so Iā€™m guessing itā€™s Nor Cal not Long Beach

RE:

So, it seems like Gonz did it, and then either Ed T or Danny Sergant.
No mention of Natas.
I always thought it was:

Natas - Boardslide
Gonz - Boardslide Fakie
Julien - Front Board
Ed T - Fifty Fifty.

But reading that, itā€™d Gonz on the fifty, tooā€¦but Ed T with the first photo of one.

Well yeah Mike V says Gonz first 5050 too, and him second but straight over the back

Both Tobin Yelland photos.

1987 was the year we started seeing it happen. ā€˜86 had Natas hucking himself at that rail at the Oceanside contest but no mag coverage of a make until the following year. Iā€™n guessing Gonz and Natas started doing them shortly afterwards and maybe Julian took them back to SF.

The first board slide photo, (probably a bung-on), was Johnee Kop in a T&C ad in Transworld Feb 87.

The O photos of Gonz were spring/summer 87

1987 for Sick Boys and Julianā€™s frontboard too.

That Gonz, 8th Street rail 5050 in NYC was filmed in 1987.

Fuck yes man @Scurbrampwoody I was waiting in the lobby of a yoga place so couldnā€™t do the full post.
You can see Bryce Kanights head in the Stranger photo I posted too so multiple people there.

I think as far as lore goes - Kele Rosencranz had the first handrail boardslide advert (although thereā€™s debate about whether it was caveman and/or not landed).
EDIT - am I mixing kopp and Rosencrans up? Sure he had one too. Youā€™re right I think @Scurbrampwoody

Natas is credited with the first person to point at handrails as a skateable thing. He famously tried to boardslide one off the stage at the Oceanside Street contest that I think was 85. The same one where Gonz 5050s the flat bar.
Puleo has talked about that and Iā€™ve spoken to one of the people who were in the same contest too and the stories are the same.
Kinda ā€œWhoa it looks like Natas is going to jump on theā€¦whoa he tried!ā€ kinda vibe.

I think itā€™s in this vid

Thereā€™s an earlier photo of Natas on street than that Johnee Kopp one.

Itā€™s the 1986 Oceanside contest.

Natas ollies up on to the stage and then heads for the rail (4:15)

I thought he was wearing a different outfit in that one.
Nice one. Respect to Tony Roberts (RealSkateStories) also since he was at everything and filmed everyone but weirdly never really gets talked about/to.

You thinking of this one?

Natas, Venice 1986. Yoshi photo.

Not a make.
