A timeline of Handrail Skateboarding

I was about to mention that cover. Might be one of the earliest handrail covers maybe? Certainly European-wise. Bung on obvs.

I think it’s Denburn carpark in Aberdeen too, the one with brick transitions. Might be wrong on that but it’s deffo Scotland.

I bet Gonz or Natas never did a bung on! So much better than a throw on or caveman!

Got a photo here of Jimmy Boyes on a handrail in 1987.

The first ollie to boardslide on a handrail I saw irl was the same weekend that The Lost Boys movie was released, so October 1987.

My friends and I had been doing bung ons down some rails that ran out on to a soft landing at the beach and we had found a proper rail that was as pretty much the same as the five stair we had been doing that on. Some random dude turned up during the session of us skating that and he repeatedly ollied to it.

That stoked us out and we went and learned ollie boardslides on the beach rail. Not only that but between us we had frontside boardslides, 5050s, 5.0s, hurricanes and ollie over tailslide/ bluntslides, landing on a piece of ply that allowed you to get four down before falling off.

By the time that Sean Goff cover came out, (spring 88), our little crew had taken (just ollie) boardslides down a number of street rails along the south coast. I remember we weren’t that impressed with the Skateboard! cover photo due to it being a bung on, on a small rail and, to top it off, he still had rails on his board.

It all happened pretty fast - from handrails not being a thing, to seeing them in mags and pros on video do them, hearing people were doing them in the UK, us learning jump ons, seeing proper ones irl, then us ollieing to them and yet still there were other better skaters ahead of us doing them earlier but by the end of summer 1988 plenty of people around the UK were doing them afaik.

They definitely did! Gonz did a throw on darkslide in Video Days

I was thinking more of the UK based terminology rather than the trick :joy:

Didn’t H do a caveman down that Police Station handrail. Remember thinking that was pretty sick at the time.

Yeah - there was a photo of it in his first Sidewalk interview

If I remember right the caption was ‘caveman near cave-men’… classic.
