Blodney you plonker!

Nah it’s fine, all accents are funny and fair game

Nor do lots of schoolyard antics, probably

You’re right, that does sound a little Fabriesque

It didn’t really happen at school as we all sounded the same

It was into well adult life and in situations where it wasn’t appropriate that really stood out.

Amongst friends I’d 100% agree with you. Otherwise it’s just a cheap shot.

There have been occasions where it was a total stranger who commented upon my accent. A notable one being in Kentucky when an old guy in the airport said, ‘Gee, you sound just like Julie Andrews’. He was clearly taking the piss but I couldn’t help but find it really funny.

RP, public school accents surely exist partly as signifiers, people want their kids to be part of that club because it makes life easier. Those with regional accents get just as much piss taking with none of the benefits it seems.

Hasn’t Blondey just changed his accent to suit his surroundings? He said himself on that podcast of his (which I actually quite enjoyed, in parts) that he’d starting talking in a different way.

I’ve long stopped trying to work out which part of Blondey is real and which is fabricated. Does it matter now?

I really didn’t used to be a fan, but now I kind of enjoy his whole thing.

I don’t approve of hiding cigars in high places.

Can’t count how many triggers this gives me!

Probably, doesn’t everyone do it to some degree? I know I play it up sometimes and tone it down a little bit if it seems appropriate. For the most part though I just get on with things and pay it no mind at all. I don’t think it’s particularly contrived or disingenuous, more just social mirroring.

Yeah pretty sure it’s a thing humans do even if it’s subconsciously.

The Welshness of my accent is definitely variable depending on who I’m with.

I used to do that annoying thing where you unconsciously mimic someones accent after spending time with them. Spent a couple of weeks in South Wales with an old mate when I first started skating and came back with a Welsh accent.

If I’ve been in the States for any length of time I have to watch myself,(it doesn’t help that my Mum/Mom is American), or I’ll end up sounding all Mid Atlantic before I know it, (shudder).

And yet when Dave Wallace developed a Spanish accent you all mocked him. For shame

I’d be exactly the same. After a week in Barca my ex wife kept elbowing me when I was ordering food.

I get the same when I talk to a waiter abroad but I’m just trying (and failing) to not sound like the policeman from Allo Allo

Of course, a relative of mine often retells the time he dared to not drop his H’s on his first shift at Chatham Dockyard, he never did that again!
