Audi A4 Estate I think. IIRC they turned out to be cheaper than equivalent year A3s. I think there’s some problem with the 2l diesel engine though, or maybe it’s the 1.8. Worth looking up to filter out those cars.

And yeah that money will buy you an old barge you can treat like shit that will run for another 5-10 years

Cheers, yeah have been looking at these. I tend to look around 50-60k miles and these are a bit pricey at that range. But I’ll look at some higher ones and see what I can find. I’m always a bit scared of high mileage German cars as I’ve been caught out with VW and BMWs before.

Easier sell to the Mrs than a Volvo estate though. On one hand I have to try not be too extravagant, on the other, she would not want to have a Volvo estate.

Luck of the draw mate. In the UK everyone’s been trained to be terrified of high milers. Over here it’s perfectly normal to buy a car that’s done 150k miles. And yeah 50-60k miles you’ll pay a premium for. I wouldn’t be scared of them but it’s a sad fact any car can suddenly break down in the first 5 mins.

I’d have a car that’s done 100k motorway miles over one that’s done 30k popping to the shops and dropping the kids off every single time.

A6 I bought in Sweden had loads of miles on it. Cost me £2000 and was brilliant.
V6 3.5 litre massive estate. Lovely to drive.

I bought a 6 year old Xtrail out here for the equivalent of 5k - bit boring to drive but you can chuck your whole house in, the dog basically has his own room in the boot, and it’s got 4x4 for getting dirty and exploring. Shit enough to not really care about what happens to it, but rad enough that you can’t wait to get stuck in and fuck around in it.

Ah what about on if those Saabs, they look wicked. No idea if they’re any good.

I feel so bad. You know the P Plate Volvo I was talking about, just popped out to get milk and saw this. Feel like it’s partly my fault for saying she’s repped it for years.

Minor issue, surely it’ll live to see another 100,000 miles

Yeah, that’s just a split hose.

That’s a good idea, might look at RAVs as my dad had one and it was great.

Alternatively, check out this Korean G-Wagon

That’s a proper square wagon.

What about the time you closed the boot and the rear window shattered though?

Freak accident, the window heater wires shorted and cooked the corner of the window on a freezing day. Could’ve happened to anyone.

I remember BDF calling you “the worst type of person ever” for laughing at my dad when he got sad about the window. Those were the best fucking times ever though. Remember that whole year where I was doing literally nothing but driving to different skateparks every day. I mostly remember the driving over the skating weirdly. Then I had to become a grown-up.

Also, that was a Peugeot 106.

I actually love this. Down to the hoss on the spare wheel cover. It’s like a land cruiser/G wagon crossover with some A Team styling thrown in.

I had one of these, a Mitsubishi Delica. I bought it as a weekend road tripper. It’s built on an L400 chassis which is the same as the Shogun/Pajero. The Hyundai you’re looking at is, I think, a rebadged Shogun (L400).

My wife and I absolutely loved the Delica. We could chuck all our camping gear and boat kit in it and still have space for days. It was good off road too. There’s nothing quite like pulling stuck Land Rover drivers out of the mud. The visibility was great for country drives as you sat high enough up to see over hedges. There were so many plus points. Obviously, the fact that it looked like a Tonka toy was a top selling point.

Why I’m telling you this is because, despite the fact that I’d love another one, it cost a tonne to keep on the road. Over four and a half years it was in the garage for at least six months and cost £17k+ in repair bills. Which considering that was around fifteen years ago and it wasn’t our main vehicle was pretty harsh. I reluctantly had to let it go in the end. I bought the Landy that I still have now as a replacement.

Over the same period my friend who swore that Pajeros were the best thing ever, went through four cheapish Pajero/ Shoguns, and was on his fifth. Just saying. It might be a case of buyer beware or maybe we were just really unlucky.

Yeah, my old man’s just got rid of his Pajero that he must have had for 25 years when he got it as a nearly new Japanese import. Although he did rebuild the top half of engine a few years back. It was a rock soild workhorse up until then, though. People often only sell some of these cars when they start going wrong.

It was great when it was running. So much fun. The head gasket went three months in to owning it. Top end rebuild and cooling bits and pieces replaced, that kicked off the ‘in for a penny…’ cycle.

I used to import Pajeros, only about 25 or so late 90’s models. SWBs were a nightmare though, everyone wanted to part ex for a LWB. And if they went wrong they cost quite a bit to fix. Solid car though.

I’m convinced this is the best thing in the world based on the centre console alone. If you dont buy it I will!
