Went out last night and had to run in the road a bit because the path was fucked.
that’s wild, what if there’s glass on the pavement
cannot be getting on with barefoot running.
glass, little tiny pebbles, driveways.
sounds like a nonsense.
Maybe they’re wearing Bruce Willis barefoot shoes
That’s understandable.
What I’m seeing is mystifying.
Less trip hazards and not getting taken out by bushes or people walking out of houses etc into your path are probably the main reasons for avoiding the pavement. Personally I will run on the road if there is no traffic or the pavement is fucked. If there are cars though I will stay on the pavement.
Not really a problem for me as I run on the seafront mostly, although at times between the electric scooters, electric motorbikes, MAMILS and fucking mental dogs the roads feel like a safer bet.
Diagnosed with overpronation yesterday. Any leads on decent looking shoes? Asics Kayano 31 and GT 2000 seem to be the recommended ones when googled, but any other opinions would be great, especially ones that look nice
I started ‘running’ again a couple of weeks ago, after a long break.
F***ing hell it’s hard to get back into. I was able to run up to 5 miles at one point, but can’t get round a small 1.5 loop without a little walking at the moment.
Things feel slightly better this week though, so I know there’s hope.
Single track road & footpaths here btw.
You do lose it pretty quick but you can get it back in less time than it took to get there in the first place. I’m building back up again at the moment just need to pay more attention to aches and pains more than I used to. Running through it surely doesn’t seem to work like it used to.
Fartlek for the win: just mix up walking and running if it means you can go further, at least until your joint and ligaments etc are all used to it again.
I used to run twice a week 5-7km then I stopped and had a ton of back issues combined with some meniscus pain. 5 years later I keep getting this urge to start again because I know it’s great for cardio and keeping weight down. I’m just scared it will fuck my back and knees up again.
I started ‘serious’ running again at the beginning of the summer. I posted a bit about it in the Injuries thread. I’ve had arthritis in my left knee for the past 15 years but not running didn’t make any difference to the pain so I thought I might as well go for it. The endorphins outweigh the discomfort.
Before the arthritis kicked in I was really serious about running, averaging 60-70 miles a week. I would periodically try and get back into it over the years but would always end up overdoing it and getting injured.
A few things have made a difference this time: daily yoga, targeted strength training for my calfs and quads to protect my knees, high-cushioning shoes and running slow 80% of the time.
I’ve had three months of running injury free so far (though the arthritic ache never disappears). Managed some amazing long runs in the Dales on holiday and did a 19:07 5k time trial last week. I’m 54 next month so I will see if I can get below 19:00 on a parkrun the day before my birthday.

80-20% has been a revelation. I wish I had known about it when I was racing. It’s so much easier on the body.
I got my strength exercises from this physio. He posts some really good stuff on his Instagram account.
Yeah, I’ve read about 80 20 so many times but all too often just find myself either falling back into a medium pace or trying to run negative splits. One thing I have managed to change is keeping my feet under me a bit more, bit higher cadence and not landing so much on my heels. It feels much easier on everything.
I’d love to run a 5k under 20 before I have to concede that can’t get any faster but don’t know if that ship sailed already.
I’m a mid-foot striker and I got some low-drop running shoes (Brooks Ghost Max) which have a lot more padding under the forefoot. Made a massive difference.
Might give some of those a go when my current ones are done.
First extremely light jog since doing my ankle two months ago. Absolutely shat it down as soon as I walked out of the door but feeling class after, let’s hope it doesn’t hurt tomorrow.
Been feeling very eggy recently and it’s definitely down to lack of exercise. Tried going to the gym while I’m been injured but I just can’t get into it whatsoever unfortunately
Somehow managed to run 10k on the treadmill. Happy with that. Never done that before.
How long did that take?
I am terrible at running and have gotten pretty into the treadmill at my new gym, but get bored of it after 10 min or so and feel like I should stop, so I inevitably do stop
