There was a documentary on TV years ago about of group of the guys who go round maintaning pylons. They need to be treated pretty regularly with weatherproofing stuff, and checked for safety and all that. Theyād be away for months at a time, just in the UK, because the weather conditions have to be totally perfect. Thereās a very precise wind speed / temperature / light that theyāre allowed to work in, so 90% of their time was spent sitting around in Travel Inns, waiting. They spent more time together, doing nothing, than they did with their families but the pay is the epitome of danger money so they were all pretty much fine with their lot.

Itās fascinating. We all know weāre all going to die, but imagine suddenly realising that itās going to be in a few minutes? They look so calm. What the fuck goes through your mind when youāre standing there, in full health on a perfectly lovely day, with your colleague, and very quickly having to decide how youād like to die?
