Yes! I got some from Church of skatan.
I snuck in to the graphics department at school a few times to use the guillotine and cut my grip down into squares haha
Who farted?
There was girl griptape that was sold in squares around 2000
Nah the black magic stuff came in long boxes didn’t it so it didn’t curl? White box with black/red logo iirc
This was cut into 4 sections, one had the star logo die cut out, swing tag packaging
Like the below but without the hardware.
AWS had a very similar one too I remember seeing in Active catalog. Girl had one too.
Ultimate early 00’s
I remember it originally being part of that make your board lite 90s trend, I think? Not sure how that worked, as it’s still the same amount of grip needed. Maybe it wasn’t part of it but around the same time. Less bolts in trucks, ect. Bingo explained it to me as it’d passed me by, when he got some of the boxes of four sheets in but I forget. I looked out for it videos, photos and loads of pros did it, World, Crail, ect. IIRC JT admitted to just scoring lines across his grip to make it look like he did it. As he couldn’t be arsed to actually do it or something. The trend was big at one point.
Early 90’s I remember a brief trend of three horizontal stripes on grip and I’m positive it was a World four square thing. '92 into 93. But thats a long, long time ago ![]()
Probably makes it easier for manufacturers and brands.
Four squares stores flat and can be posted in an envelope.
Plus, if you have a piece left at the end of the roll that isn’t quite deck length, you can get a couple of squares out of it and still sell it.
If you’re using any kind of graphic griptape (eg Roofies, Shake Junt, Grizzly etc), do your tricks still count?
Personally I’d say no, you’re disqualified.
Possible exemption for Madrid Fly, pre-1990.
I know there are probably some notable exceptions but I’m fully ready to disagree with them
Imagine having a teddy bear on your grip tape. Urrgh.
Motion seconded.
My current board is gripped in the squared manner.
You used to be able to get Death Box Tea Pot stickers to put in their grip. Those are the only ones I’m guilty of as a yoof.
Agreed branded grip looks awful.
I can’t stand seeing Shake Junt grip in any footage. I see so many people rocking it. Why would you fuck your board (and footage) up like that!? That said, in my youth I let the guy at the skate shop talk me into getting clear grip on my board. It was stinking (quite literally, as I managed to get dog shit on it the first time I skated it). Shame, as it was the Paul Sheir pool ball board as I recall.
I was bang into the lite set up! 7.5 deck, 52mm wheels, popped shields, low trucks, 2 bolts. Had the grip lines but only to look cool.
A lot of BMXers down the local were angle grinding bits off and drilling holes at the same time too.
Wonder if anything below an 8inch will ever make a come back?
