Fashion Police

The North Face played a vital role in shaping the identity of graffiti writers, boosting crews and the local fashion scene in New York during a time when street-graffiti was at one of its peaks.

Can anyone explain this to me?

I think that should read the other way around.

I would like to know the exact origins of how outerwear became so popular in hip hop. It cant all be because of Rae’s Snow Beach jacket. And presumably Rae got his inspiration somewhere. All I can think it that it’s outdoor gear for people who spent a lot of time in the street.

RUN-DMC way BITD had a song about their adidas and Kangol was big too (just to mention two). Hip Hop has always mentioned clothing and trainers. As fashion was also big in Breakdancing too, which was massive around early Hip Hop. So Hip Hop artists, graffiti artists, breakers, ect have always cared about looking good.

Edit: I guess you mean Timberland and North Face more, as in outdoor clothing though.
