General Election '24

That’s what I thought. Keeps him in the pages of the papers tomorrow as he knows they’ll be dominated by tonight’s debate.

I think this is all but confirmed already. Zzzzzzz

All this stuff will keep Farage on the front pages. It will galvanise voters who hate him and those who love him to turn out and vote. It will take votes from the Tories and help Starmer achieve a super-majority. But depending on how many votes Farage gets it may also help him in his ambition to destroy and replace the Conservatives as the main opposition, as happened to Canada’s Conservative Party and a newer more radical right/of-centre party a few years back.

i don’t see this as a good thing frankly. although again, it’d be sick if we had a labour government with a lib dem opposition

With tactical voting by Lib Dem voters, this is (theoretically) possible.

man it’d be so great. i’m finally old enough to think lib dems are a thing

The TLDR version is:

If you’re a Lib Dem voter and Labour have a much higher chance of winning, give your vote to Labour.

More Labour = Less Tories which will give Lib Dems max chance of gaining the most power in Parliament. With tactical voting you can get Tories under 60 seats and Lib Dems can get to 60+

If your Lib Dem can win, vote Lib Dem obviously. Same if your a Labour voter and your in a clear Lib Dem area, give your vote to Lib Dems.

Basically, stop the Tories at all costs. There’s a website that will tell you how to vote tacticaly closer to polling day.

Current state of the polls as at yesterday, according to the BBC

  • Labour 45%
  • Conservative 24%
  • Reform 11%
  • LibDem 10%
  • Green 5%
So already you can see that if Reform voters all voted for Sunak instead, the gap would be much closer. Similarly, if Lib Dem voters all voted Labour the gap would be huge. It will be interesting to see if there are any shifts over the next few days as a result of all the coverage of Nigel Farage.

Did the Lib Dem’s just fall off the cliff politically after Clegg sold them out with their coalition with the Tories? Cameron wouldn’t let him do anything and it was like Clegg almost disappeared for the whole time. It really wasn’t good for them.

Whilst Reform and Tory voters are more interchangeable, it’s by no means 1:1. Plenty of Labour voters would also vote Reform too so it’s not as easy as equating them (i did this too). there is a figure for how many Reform voters would vote Tory or Labour as second preference and I think it’s like 4:1 or something (iirc).

Just before the GE was announced, Reform hit a bit of a slump in the polls which was not mirrored at all in a rise in the Tories fortunes.

There are tons of previous Tory voters who may vote Reform or just stay home on July the 4th.

Agreed. It’s probably the same with LibDem voters and Labour too. More would rather vote Labour than Tory but it’s probably not 1:1

Urrgh. Rishi isn’t exactly making me like him.

Neither is Starmer tbh, but he seems to be less of a Michael Fabricant.

Yup. You just need to be slightly less of a Michael Fabricant than the other guy.

Starmer is not doing a great job here. He is struggling to address directly what Labour will actually do, and completely ignored a couple of the accusations Sunak levelled at him.

Yeah I have absolutely no issue with taxes or tax rises to improve the country’s infrastructure. As it is, the country is fucked
