I bet in this new national service the Tory kids still get to be Jr Officers or something and the rest of ours are Privates. They’ll be no mixing with the riffraff and sharing of views!
Plus our army is so fucked at the moment from Tory cuts that it’s no longer classed as an elite army, it’s a sneaky way to build it back up for free!

Good idea. It could be a nice way for private school educated kids to share some of their privilege with those less fortunate. Whipping the oiks into shape would be good practice for their careers in politics.

They can’t retain the people they already have, they can’t recruit enough people as it is. National service would never work. You’d be spending millions on putting people through the process, training them, giving them kit etc before they are even at a stage where they are deployable or reach their unit.
Some cap badges like any cavalry unit their officers are usually the privately educated school boys. They stay in until they reach Captain so they can use it as their title once they retire or their dads will stipulate they have to do X years service to be entitled to their inheritance.
At various stages through your basic training you can discharge yourself by writing a letter, would that still stand with national service?
