General Election '24

You can’t really object, well you can but it’s tricky and you go to prison if you do, but you can do civil service instead or if you’re lucky you get kicked out for medical reasons.

It’s not as easy as you’d think to invade an island nation. Think Hitler and WW2. While he could stomp all over the rest of mainland Europe, the U.K. was so much more tricky. They could nuke us off the face of the earth easier.

Get enough packet for the football lot and they’d happily fight the foreigners if there was a land invasion

Spot on, I suspect there would be an exemption rule for the ruling classes

Ain’t happening in a million years anyway

Laughing at how ridiculous this is in the car this morning. LBC phone ins say a lot. The Tories are utter wank as is their voters.

It’s not like some world leaders who are willing to send other peoples children to war would weasel out of doing it themselves? Michael Fabricants. I know it’s the U.S but the point stands.

I think the “2nd best army in the world” isn’t even the 2nd best army in Ukraine. Mostly drunk, undisciplined, untrained cannon fodder. All the nuclear threats are just hot air.

I asked my estonian skate mates whether they wanted to fight if Russia invaded and I was surprised at how keen they all were.

Yeah whilst I am probably the least patriotic person on this island I really doubt Russia would fuck us up unless they literally made a bridge of dead Russians across the channel and then overwhelmed us with drinking contests or something.

Their war record is based on waiting for winter

Eh? A year in the army or 25 days voluntary work:

Mandatory service for all 18-year-olds is being proposed, with either a year in the military or 25 days volunteering in some sort of community service.

Yeah that’s true. I think the war in Ukraine has shattered any illusions we had about Russia’s military might.

I was generally thinking that Russians are pretty gnarly in general and we’re not, but by the time they’d actually get to our shores they’d likely not care much anymore

Does the Russian army travel well? (Afghanistan 1979-1989). Albania kicked them out on their own in 3 months in 1961. Our own army is apparently hollowed out and they probably have much bigger numbers but they’ve spanked loads of that against Ukraine. I’m pretty sure the NATO army is larger and would also beat them, even without US. Nuclear warheads aside tho.

From what I hear the Russian army is a shell. All the people that are professional/good at fighting are dwindling and all the joe publics that reckon themselves are all long gone as they’ve all been through the meat grinder. They even offered domestic prisoners ‘go free’ after 6 months if they sign up to fight. So all the prisons are empty and you can imagine the quality of people that are at the front.

Fewer and fewer people making it home and those that do are putting everyone else off as they know they’re just cannon fodder. So only reluctant/forced conscripts. Russian deaths apparently at half a million.

I understand I am seeing it through the west’s lens and am seeing only the best bits, but it’s hard to see how professionally useless Russia is at warfare. Then you have to add in the endemic corruption. Majority of their Black Sea fleet has been sunk against a country that has no navy. And Ukrainian army has already publicly scheduled the Crimean bridge for destruction this summer.

As for the British army they still seem to have an excellent reputation for professionalism and have been training up Ukrainian troops. But warfare has completely changed from the happy go lucky days of spitfires, dambusters and blackadder going over the top. It’s all drones drones drones so don’t think we’ll be picking off ruskies on the white cliffs of dover, it’ll be the usual russian tactic of razing everything to the ground with artillery before sending any shit troops in.

Sorry for going on. Feels a bit too close for comfort though, Russian border is only a couple hours away from me and they have quite happily stated that ex soviet states are next, Estonia being one of the smallest. Hence me and fam having emergency evacuation plans and getting all our passports renewed asap.

I follow a lot of war strategists on X and this guy is pretty good and seems to give balanced opinions:

You make it sound like that is the last time the U.K. has been in battle, haha. They’ll be picking off pirates right now with drones to keep our goods coming. They fought in Bosnia and Kosovo too, so WW2 wasn’t even the last time they’ve fought in Europe. Plus Ukraine are using our weapons and training to help defeat Russia right now.

Going on the state of customer service with the youngsters the age for national service, good fucking luck . They seem just about capable at pulling pints or serving food let alone getting up at 5am for national service .

Anyone see that clip from that Tory MP prick Bridgen doing the rounds? I’m not going to look for it but it’s highly irresponsible conspiracy type stuff about we are unofficially at war with Russia, UK election is a sham etc. Even though there may be some grains of truth in there it’s potentially dangerous, possible escalation I reckon.

While I get what you mean being the father of two useless almost teens, haha… this still feels like such an old person thing to say about ‘the youth of today!’

Yeah I know it does , just reflecting the standard of service since we went full brexit and people who want to do the work replaced with people who clearly don’t want to be there .

I’m not sure that’s a purely Brexit thing, the U.K. has always been notorious for bad customer service way before then. It’s definitely been the subject of stand up and discussion for years, as unlike America say, they don’t rely on tips to pay for most of their wage. So as long as they are doing the bare minimum they know they’ll be okay.

That is true though. Nato and America are fighting a proxy war against Russia. Without Nato and American financial and weaponry support, and military training, Ukraine would fallen ages ago. The build up to this war has been going on for decades and we are seeing the escalation of it now. It’s fact, not conspiracy.

The title of this video is obvious clickbait, but it’s an intersting history lesson - recorded well before (8 years ago), the full scale invasion kicked off.
