Is Kevin Rodriguez the schizophrenic emo half of Nick Matthews in this?
enjoying this and it’s mainly down to the feel. It feels like a skateboard video, it feels like that how you watch other people skateboarding professionally rather than seeing your mates skate.
It’s purely down to what they have done with it as a whole. I know it’s all still filmed on modern gear but they have put the whole edit through VHS or some settings that simulate VHS or older degraded medium.
It feels authentic and not like HD which does not have ANY feel at all. HD does not mesh with music, while it has more detail than ever it’s disconnected to any vibe it could have.
Seeing a video done like this isn’t just tapping into nostalgia it’s presenting skateboarding in a way that feels like it’s unobtainable, it’s a movie of people doing what you can’t and presented in a way that you can’t see it in real life.
If you see someone in HD doing something mental, you can’t relate to that as a trick but you can imagine watching it from across the street in real life and it feels real. Maybe that’s a good trait for some people? I think musicless raw footage edits are fun for this, but for a video experience from professional companies I think making an edit feel like it’s a completely meshed product, that’s the key to it being enjoyable, for me at least.
Never been fussed about these skaters in particular but the whole feel has elevated them all tenfold because they look so good in this way.
babble
Krod’s switch bigspin noseslide was s pleasant surprise. Obviously more talented than just wallies. Although thr tree stump one was rad.
Yeah, pretty much said that to Si at the park last night - Watch it on a TV because it is a skate vid more like they used to be.
Great intro, stopped to say I wasn’t expecting a 50 dolphin flip out(?) in a Hockey vid, back to it.
Not generally a fan of Hockey and I can only name a couple of their skaters before I watched this particular video. Music sort of worked, even if I didn’t like it at all, but to be fair, it was never going to win me over.
From a design/art direction perspective, they absolutely nailed it. Huge influences / passing of the torch from Timecode era Alien Workshop. As a few others have said, this is a proper skate video, which for me means it’s a true creative expression of what a skate company can be, like your favourite band or football team.
Top level skating all over the place, big fan of Nick Stain and Ben Kadow.
Good watch always enjoy the hockey stuff music is always on point and the spots are pretty grim looking with some life affirming body checks.
Andrew Allen looking like he stays in his room smashing pop tarts all day and drinking the bong water whilst dreaming his Nirvana tribute band is gunna make it from the working mens clubs of Grimsby. I can dig it.
The slam at the bottom of the bank was horrible
Cool Nik Stain interview here with some background on spot hunting etc.
He seems really nice.
Finally got around to rewatching this in full after the first viewing the day it came out. Very impressed with with Diego Todd and that new Cruise kid. Very impressed indeed. AA did alright but has a terrible kickflip. Kadow ender was bonkers. Wasn’t fussed at all by Krod. Now……Nik Stain……some of the clips in this part were actually so bad. I’m a Nik Stain fan and have been forever but I’m not sure why 1. He had last part and 2. They included 50% of his footage in this video. They are just bad clips. Lazy in fact. It’s annoying because they are sprinkled in with some fantastic footage and amazing looking spots. Very weird part and I’m confused why he got the curtains. Yes Cruise is a new AM but he should have closed it out. He’s bonkers.
I definitely agree with the Nik Stain comments. I’ve been a fan for ages but that part was very filler heavy I thought. The good stuff was great but there was a lot in there that wasn’t up to scratch for him I thought. Could be been half as long and would have made for a way better part especially being the ender.
Overall though another great Hockey video with some amazing skating and spots.
Yeah there was some really drab stuff at the start of Nik’s section mixed in with the good stuff.
Quite baffling how they sat down and decided to put it in, despite him having more than enough rad footage for a full section.
Diego Todd was the highlight for me. Surprising and exciting.
Good to see AA with the full section. Quite a few clips looked quite laboured though, which I don’t associate with his footage in general.
Overall very sick despite a few odd choices.
Art and design was rad
