How lucrative is it to be a pro skater in the UK?

If it wasn’t for the stress…

“Yeah so I’d just finished my first semester and decided I was going to be a porn star, I had it all sorted and was definitely going to do it but then someone said Id have to work Tuesdays and that’s a dealbreaker for me so I decided I’d just go and work in Greggs”

Ignore all this advice - none of us ever made it at pro level so now we’re all just jaded and angry at the industry that let us down.

Follow your dreams kid

Start your own company and put yourself on as a pro. Plenty of space for another board company out there.

lmao i just started skating recently i dont hv any insane tricks tbh, the pro skater route i was thinking could happen many years down the line cus im super into it rn and thought it was an interesting idea to look into

mhm yeah, i changed my mind on it. it was just an interesting idea i had, to be honest i only started a month or so ago and i think im progressing quite quickly plus i also rlly enjoy skate culture so it just seemed like a career path at some point.

judging off the replies tho, it doesnt seem that fun worrying about money and sponsors and contracts and whatnot

Ed Selego went pro something ridiculous like 3 years after starting, which I always found impressive

Just send a letter out to everyone important in the U.K. industry with your trick list, telling them you are inviting offers for sponsorship. See how that goes?

To be fair to @Ezekiel it has created a good thread.
Hello to you mate and welcome to forum.
We’re all (nearly) old as hell.

Herrick wrote a letter to Mambo with a tricklist written out and got sponsored so it works

Terry Kennedy was even quicker than that I think but you probably shouldnt use him as an archetype

Not pro but didn’t javier Nunez have a 411 check out thinger after skating for like 6 months?

If you enjoy the culture @Ezekiel hang around and post on here. You will learn a lot.

Mostly bad - some good.

If you enjoy the culture then hanging around on here will soon suck that out of you

No but like, literally post a sponsor me tape. On VHS, in a jiffy bag. That’s what we all had to do before none of us went pro.

Thread raises an important ethical question though: is there any point in encouraging someone to pursue skateboarding as a ‘career’ in this country? Should magazines be filled with more stories about studious skateboarders who stayed in school and managed to carve out non-skate careers? Probably make for mega boring content.

I started skating in 1993 and as a naive 15 year old thought I could get sponsors in the next 5-10 years .
30 years later ……. Still nothing but worked in skate shops which was rad as hell .

If you want to get involved with the industry I’d recommend checking out your local skate shop (not route one) to see if they have any vacancies , get a job and you’ll get a good insight into the industry, local scene and the sort of money that’s around . And it’s not much .
