Working from home where possible must surely have so many environmental benefits

Hopefully they can find away to advance their industries and reduce emissions, it shouldn’t be beyond the wit of humankind and it’s in nobody’s interest not to try. But I certainly wouldn’t feel in a good position trying to lecture China about the state of the planet. Atmospheric CO2 is an accumulation, most of which they had nothing to do with. I think if I was them I’d be telling us to go and take a running shit especially when our own house is very much not in order.

Been thinking a lot about that and if you don’t mind limiting the brands and styles there are enough companies now virtually all Uk based and sourced making clothes and other stuff to cut China out a fair amount. But obviously not entirely

Yeah but how does the consumer know the difference and choose accordingly ?

Not true though is it. Loads of the high end Italian brands are known to have horrific supply chains. Price isn’t a proper reflection.

Think we might be agreeing to be honest. I’m advocating for some kind of way for consumers to make an informed choice about buying stuff like clothes similar to the way I know if my eggs come from some horrific corpse-strewn chicken Armageddon shed or fell out the arse of the happiest organic Duchy bird alive. Or the free range middle ground.

I’d buy from responsible Chinese factories too but can’t easily find out which ones are which. So in the meantime I try to put my money into the Patagonia type places or just buy second hand or do without.

Thanks for posting this!

And, welcome to here.

Who still buys DVD players?

That’s just Moore’s law, no? The number of transistors on a microchip doubles every two years, though the cost of computers is halved. Moore’s Law states that we can expect the speed and capability of our computers (electrical appliances) to increase every couple of years, and we will pay less for them.

Interesting fact Moore’s law is potentially nearing its end as transistors are pretty much at the point where they physically can’t get any smaller.

Quantum computing is the next chapter.

Thanks for posting, that was great. I only heard 2nd / 3rd hand about Lorne’s passing, via that Ron Ashby FB post. V interesting to hear from someone who knew him

Thanks to all for the likes. I think my motivation for posting, in the light of Lorne’s passing was so that people were made aware of who was responsible for the existence of the parks that he built.

The fact that I can see that the post has been read and appreciated means that the next time that any of you skate one of those spots or hear it mentioned, there’s a possibility that you might just think to yourself, ā€˜I know who built this place.’ Therefore, the job’s done.

Obviously, as time goes on, these sorts of things are forgotten. Especially within something like skateboarding where we have always been fixated on the ā€˜now’ and constant progression. The past never seemed particularly relevant. We all know who built something like St Paul’s Cathedral that is, Atlantic Drift aside, totally irrelevant to us. When it comes to skate parks and spots, they’ve been there for so long that they might just seem like a permanent fixture. Something that’s always been there. We tend to forget that someone real had to design and build these places that we all get to enjoy. (Cue blue plaque scheme for skate spots… not really. I’m joking).

It’s only a recent development that people are interested in what came before. Possibly because as skaters of my age grew up, so did skateboarding itself. We had no concept of ā€˜what’s next’ as that was uncharted territory. Kids coming up now can look forward and know how things might look down the line. So they have the luxury of looking back and beg, borrow and stealing whatever bits they feel are cool, (and quite often cocking it up- but that’s another story :grinning:). The fact that there’s an older generation now means that we can put on our rose tinted specs and have a look back. Although we all know that it’s not simply bias that makes the mid 90’s, pre ā€˜that game’ era the best. That’s just pure fact.

I’m sure, at some point, we’ve all been cornered by ā€˜that guy’ who seems intent on talking our ear off about how things were back in the day, (back in the day quite often only being the previous skate generation of 4,6 or maybe 8 years previous). I know that it happened to me and despite the fact that I got my first board in the late ā€˜70’s and was well into it by the early 80’s that dude was still around and I was never interested in what he had to say… too much current, much cooler shit to be getting on with you know  . Also, I’m self aware enough to realise that I’m quite probably doing the digital equivalent of that right now…doh

Even as an old feller I’m still down to see new stuff and keep up with skating as best I can. These days though I also have the added bonus of being able to look back now and get a lot of enjoyment out of reminiscence and wallowing in nostalgia. I do try my best to keep it to myself unless asked though. So don’t worry, there won’t be any unsolicited skate based ā€˜A la Recherche du Temps Perdu’ kind of things being posted by me.

Also, after reading back my first post after posting it, I realise that a brief proof read wouldn’t go amiss before hitting ā€˜reply’. 7/10 for content and 5/10 for punctuation and grammar. Certainly not a ā€˜see me’ , but a definite ā€˜could do better’. Another thing is that this is a postscript to my previous post and I am aware that posting stuff in the relevant threads is a thing and will strive to do that in future. As well as keeping posts a damn sight shorter than these two.

I definitely would like to hear more Proustian skateboard memories.

That is pathetic! What a fucking stupid idea, as if we need to be more negative in this world especially towards women .

Non emergency Plastic surgery isn’t great and I’m not a fan, but who the fuck decides to shame women (who probably already have body issues and severe insecurity problems) like that.

Deranged is exactly the word!

It’s what you can expect from art made by an advertising executive. No values.

I’m struggling to believe that nobody stood up whilst this was being pitched (or whilst it was being installed) and asked ā€œIsn’t this a massive pile of dogshit?ā€

Ha, just said exactly that in the comments. I imagine there’s a lot of people involved in something like this and nobody wanted to, or felt like they could, notice it was totally horrible?
