I think a lot of people feel taken for mugs by Boris. If you thought lockdowns were a good idea, there he was flouting them. If you thought lockdowns were a bad idea, there he was telling you not to see your granny and expecting you to stay cooped up at home rather than using your own common sense about social contact while he was doing whatever he liked.
But people also feel taken for mugs by the thousands of young men crossing the channel by boat claiming to be refugees from war, and then vanishing when their claims don’t stack up. So if they get processed in Rwanda the genuine refugees still end up in Britain, but the fake ones don’t get the chance to play the system, and the people smugglers find life a lot harder.
It was an idea Tony Blair suggested when he was PM but it didn’t happen then. I think it will be popular.
The question is, will it outweigh all the other stuff people dislike Boris Johnson for?
