Found this interesting. The bit about Veles I had no idea about tbh.

‘Veles made international news in 2016 when it was revealed that a group of teenagers in the city were controlling over 100 websites producing fake news articles in support of U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, which were heavily publicized on the social media site Facebook. Although the websites were politically charged, the motive of these websites is thought to be to generate massive amounts of ad revenue, bringing into question problems with Facebooks newsfeed algorithm.’

That’s true. And I think it’s always been true that the people who bang on about free speech the most always tend to shut up about it very quickly when it’s free speech they disagree with.
One of the rare examples I saw recently of someone standing up for free speech they disagree with was Trevor Philips. He said it offends him when people call him the ‘n’ word and he feels even worse when they use it about his children, but unless there is an actual threat of violence, he has no right to stop them.
I’m not sure I could be that committed to free speech if I was in his shoes. But you’ve got to respect the man.

I actually think that “free speech” always has to come second to “don’t be a dick”. People have proved they can’t be trusted with true free speech so they don’t deserve it. That’s “people” as an all-encompassing term rather than specific as well.

I’d buy don’t be a dick. I think too many people think and say dickish things and I wish they wouldn’t. Against that, I don’t think anyone has the right or the power to tell anyone else what they can and can’t say unless they’re inciting an actual crime. We don’t own other people.

In an ideal world I think society should judge what is expectable not the law. The more we let other people have control of what is allowed, the more they’ll keep taking. Being offended is so subjective.

But at the same time fuck racism, sexism and homophobia, ect and why should be people have to hear that? It’s so tricky.

In Japan on holiday and read a news article about the encrypted app gangs called ‘Tokuryu’ that are causing problems for the police here. Pretty nuts. They recruit people through online ads on social media, send them instructions through encrypted chat apps, and send them to commit crimes.

The recruits meet outside burglary targets with other people they have never met, do the crime together then all leave separately. They don’t know each others names or anything. Could kind of only work in the anonymous megacities that exist over here.
