This apparently has a petition with over 400000 signatures opposing its introduction already. Iâm never sure why ID cards here generate such venomous opposition, and considering the voter ID thing I can only see it as a good thing for our democracy.
Iâd like to know what it would mean in practice, how would it be used?
Also, whatâs the difference between the government scraping all our data and the big tech firms?

Because a centralised database with every UK citizenâs information is not a good idea, if a bad actor or the government goes awry, they will have a full list of everyoneâs data to filter through and target if needed.
Currently you need to show a picture of your face with your government ID to log onto grindr, I am not doing that and therefore not using the app, as I donât want my personal details added to that database, because if a homophobe or group of homophones gets that data, they have names and addresses of every gay person in the country which they could target.

I work with a lot of EU citizens and they all use ID cards, almost interchangeably with their passports. Theyâre always like, âwhat dâyou mean you donât have an ID card?â Itâs never been a detriment to them so donât see why it should be for us.
I think all this stuff about âbad actorsâ and worrying about data compromise or the government going awry all sounds like exactly the same sort of justification the Yanks use to justify the Second Amendment and comes across to me as paranoia. That could just be me being naive though.

Donât the DVLA and passport authorities already have all this online? So any baddies could just hack that couldnât they? Unless you mean the digital ID would also include extra stuff like sexual orientation, religion, etc?

I know theyâre painting these digital IDâs as some way to deal with illegal immigrants ability to work, but arenât illegal immigrants already unable to work unless itâs cash in hand or for companies not so interested in checking that sort of thing, so how is the likely to help?
Yeah, I find them using the hot topic of the moment, helping to stop illegal immigrants from coming over as they wonât be able to get work with the ID system very dodgy. Like you said, itâs all cash in hand and many of them forced into doing a lot of shady work anyway. It not going to change anything.

Iâm not stressing about someone selling the info. All our dna has been nicked from the NHS already and Chinese have access to our routers to find out who likes sucking toes in the morning and who has a chess club membership.
