Do this and will be okay

I mean, what Jon is talking about is fully monitoring it. Most " normal " kids with school and other routines are only going to get a finite amount of screentime.

Leaving them alone with a screen for very long un-interacted with is a crap way to parent no matter what they’re doing on there.

Not sure that’s fair. I’m not a parent so don’t really have real world experience on this, obviously you have kids so I may well be wrong, but I can imagine it’s extremely difficult to curtail a child’s screen use once they have their own phone? If they’re 10, sure, parents can lock it down and take it away. But if they’re 15, 16 and have their own phone I can imagine it’d be impossible. Even with the best will in the world.

Thats not even including computer game stuff.

Mate Twitter is so fucked…

I thought I’d done something wrong to get all of the filth but the only thing I have done wrong is not delete my account after Musk bought it.

Oh yeah I’m talking about when they’re under 10, when you should be aware of everything they are looking at really. Once they are 14, 15, 16 it’s much harder to do that without seeming like some kind of authoritarian to them.

Seems like the too much screen time thing is something that can start really early when you have both parents working just to pay rent etc. It’s so easy to be judgmental but in reality it’s much more difficult. Not trying to minimise that at all as my shit definitely stinks too.

The habits start young

Oh yeah. Obviously sometimes you just need your child to shut up for 20 minutes so pop them infront of the iPad.

But when you read about preschool children trying to swipe on books, it gets a bit worrying

Some people just leave them on there for yonks. That is what is most damaging I think. Everyone needs real interaction and experiences.

Someone said kids are overprotected in the real world and underprotected online. Thinking back to my own childhood and even without the rose tinted specs on I think there’s a big element of truth to that. But I guess the problem then might be what the fuck are they meant to do instead if they lose a major way that they interact with friends.

We have the kids devices timed so once they have reached that time it locks them out. They go through phases of wanting to sit on them and be lazy and then they don’t touch their phone or watch anything on YT for a week. I think it’s all about normalising them not needing it without too much of an hoohaa.

Been trying to get mine (both under 11) into regular organised clubs/activities so they get lots of social contact that way but appreciate it’s not the full picture especially when they get into teenage years

Yeah, it seems so much has to be based around organised activities now. It’s a shame they can’t just hang out with mates outside. There are kids that still do that at my daughters school but mainly it’s the ones whose parents give no fucks at all what they’re up to whereas it just used to be the norm.

Cricket twice a week for mine, swimming once and football once. I think that’s enough at 7.

They can’t go outside and play like we did.

No we don’t. There’s proof that the algorithms created by Meta etc to purposely make you addicted to the platforms(largely through targeting emotions like anxiety and anger) are bad for people. The government could even go after these companies and heavily regulate their algorithms, but that would be too much like hard work and might make some shareholders and billionaires upset and we can’t have that.

Social media was pretty fun at the start. It’s unrecognisable now, ads, sponsored posts, disinformation, rage bait, it’s an algorithmic hell scape.

Did buy a set of double ladders off market place once though, not all bad.

What about MSN?

We need MySpace Tom to make a return and save us from the algorithm. Made £50 million (peanuts in 2026 tech money) and retired before he was 35 and was never heard from again. Legend
