Independent Trucks, Symbolism and Upper Middle Class Liberal Culture War on Nonconformity

“I don’t want brands to change and leave behind their old racist/transphobic/bigoted clientele who pay their wages” is a really weird flex for someone who works in advertising and marketing but ok, maybe Im misreading it

Yes, if you want to change people’s minds and behaviour it’s almost impossible to do it by disagreeing with them or proving them wrong. Mostly this just causes them to double down. So if you shame people for collecting golliwogs you might get them to hide them away but they’ll bring them out when they think they’re in like-minded company and they’ll feel even angrier about ‘political correctness gone mad.’ You know the sort.

There’s a book from the 1939s by Dale Carnegie: he says “a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.” Fast forward to the 21st century and behavioural economics is saying the same thing: to change people’s attitudes you have to start with a point of common ground and work from there.

I saw a story in the news a couple of years ago about an Ulster Unionist politician who gave the speech at his gay son’s same-sex wedding, despite previously having described homosexuality as an abomination. That happened not because he was called out by his opponents but because of a point of common ground: he loved his son and wanted him to be happy. Because of that he did something he’d never have imagined himself doing in a million years.

It’s worth looking up Prof. Tali Sharot and the Strategy of Common Ground.

Did you have anything to do with this rebranding project by any chance?

Nah nah

It’s a skateboard fucking truck company, not a political party trying to win over voters and hearts and minds. Let’s keep a reality check on things.
It’s their job to sell trucks, not reeducate people.

I’m still pissed about Brexit but you know what, as a fucking grown up, I have to get on with it.

Boo-fucking-hoo…

I’ve probably said all I want to say about Indy now - probably too much, especially considering I don’t even ride them. I’m done for this subject now.

Phew as we were, no one needs to leave or focus their account
