Skatepark bullying was always wholesome. I felt like we always had the best cusses, we’d only be hurtful if someone was being a chief and it was usually used to hype people up. I wonder if that’s still a thing thes days
I miss getting abused haha. Like dumb names, it was all in a good way. The dudes that took the piss, also took us under their wings and made sure we were all good, and no one was completely blowing it.
Off to one of their 50th next weekend.
I remember skating street and being a fucking pussy about putting feet on things.
“Get that fucking sand out ya vagina” from the other side of the street. Did it next go!
This is it. I regularly say to one of the younger guys I work with that nobody ever emptied his pencil case down the stairs between lessons and it really shows. I’m not one of these people who’ll say that everyone’s a snowflake now or anything but society generally being nicer and more accepting has created a situation where folks’ ability to either not be a dickhead or laugh at themselves is completely gone. This isn’t restricted to the younger generation either.
I dont think bullying has disappeared. If anything it’s moved online. What has changed taking the piss out of things is political correctness which in turn has been strengthened through social echo chambers.
All the free skate mags now are so boring. They’re very inclusive which is great but there’s no humour in any of them. Skateboarder’s companion is much better.
Not related to skating but last time I went climbing there’s a guy trying to do a hard problem, but he’s not using his feet, thinks it looks better on the gram if he does it all on his arms. My help was dismissed. Seems like it’s all about appearance now and not so much about substance. A bit of an exagerration and it’s not like I haven’t got caught up in social media at times myself but I feel like it has shaped people’s behaviour and attitudes in a really bad way in some ways.
It seems like people are doing things that appeal to vanity, rather than the soul. Can’t help but feel like we’d be doing a lot better without social media and smartphones.
Nah, I was thinking how skating was at its best when getting in the mag was the personal goal of (almost) every skater, haha.
Even for pros getting in the mag, getting a cover then dropping a bangin’ video part meant something. Wasn’t life great when footage and photos were drip feed to us? The crazy thing is our kids are going to look back of these days as their chilled, fun, easier times as life just gets faster, more hectic and shitter.
Am I wrong or does this year’s Soty seem very whatevs?
My opinion is that the kids are not reading mags and the older guys who are feel very jaded about thrasher basically offering statues and covers to the highest bidder.
Yeah it really does. Something like Trick Of The Year probably means more to kids now. Instagram is more likely their Bible than Thrasher, in their short attention span content world…
As good as the mags was the constant (but not to contact) stream of content, war of the roses/thistles, crossfire jams, shop riots, Uk champs What a time to be alive.
