Chuck in video premiere’s that chumps like me could blag there way into and meet there favourite pro’s/other skate nerds too! All those things made the whole national scene feel much closer.
Big boomer energy in this discussion.
Let’s not bring back bullying. We may have laughed hazing off and stuck with skating, but I bet there’s loads who were put off by that behaviour and did not.
Free consistently has decent content in it, and its curation is great (particularly the videos it chooses to promote and do articles around - it gives European skaters a bigger platform to be seen). It’s chilled out on the avant garde layouts in recent years.
Social media sucks and is mega toxic for young people, but most of us still use it daily. Very insightful comment by @PolarJames about increased vanity - fillers, face tats, filters all suggest, to me, that people’s perceptions of themselves are being warped in some way.
I never thought it was bullying or hazing. Just mates taking the piss. This was all between friends
We only ever encouraged people to skate who we didn’t know.
OBVIOUSLY I was joking about the bullying thing
Shut it, four eyes.
Oh I agree, as someone who was bullied way less than some others, but still definitely bullied a bit (Valentines rose sent to one of the music teachers, pencil case emptied, water tipped into the top of my locker a few times), my school life was fucking miserable. I do genuinely believe though, that because of this I’m better at recognising when someone is having a laugh or just being a Fabricant. Was it worth it? Probably not, I’d have probably been alright anyway and it could’ve easily gone the other way and turned me into an incel with anger management problems.
The thing that prompted my original comment was seeing said younger workmate of mine being introduced to one of his girlfriend’s male friends, who just did a little chuckle as he extended his hand to shake it and say “you alright mate?” My mate was pissed off for the rest of the night and kept being like, “the fuck you laughing at?” By the end of the night we were having to physically restrain him. It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen from somebody who’s normally sound as fuck. It’s not the only time since then I’ve seen that kind of thin-skinned nonsense and it’s exclusively been in lads born in the 21st century. I can’t think of any other reason why it’d be.
Jesus
Fs 180 ss bs nosegrind bs revert grinning like a maniac? Oooof
Jesus that was fast.
As someone who started skating in the 2000’s, listening to 90’s skaters brag about the bullying culture in skating is embarrassing.
We need to preserve traditional skateboarding values.
You can’t even say pushing mongo is wrong these days without being cancelled. Have to play along and pretend it’s ok.
I’ve had enough. Games gone.
Going to put some flags up along my local A road.
I got bullied last night.
“We’ve had a bit of everything tonight…Tech! ATV! Sponsored!.. (looks at me) and Mike folding himself in half on the ledge like a deckchair!”
Everything went wrong when coloured wheels became acceptable.
Sad but true.
It’s political correctness gone mad but even saying that labels me as a fabricant.
Mongo exists just like mall grabs but neither are good. Except switch mongo.
Not sure why I’m explaining this but it’s for practical reasons, not just aesthetiucs.
Pushing mongo inherently makes the skater more off balance and slower. Mall grabbing isn’t practical to prep the position of the board for dropping in or pushing off.
Think of athletes, you don’t see track athletes run, jump or push off the wrong foot, just like you don’t see them grabbing their equipment the wrong way. Imagine a hammer thrower cradling the ball in their hands instead of gripping the lead, or a discus thrower holding the disc like a waiter’s tray…
That would be dope if they got some distance with it.
I wanted to say something the other day when skating. Noticed alot of younger adult skaters in joggers. Not cool Kalis type baggy ones. Tight ones that their mum probably got them.
Trouser etiquette is dead in 2025.
They’re taking style queues from Scoot-Culture! ![]()
Bullying is worse than ever in schools it seems and it’s nastier. Skate bullying was never really a thing, I think it was more regulating and nurturing. Most people got it right but i’m sure some were just dicks because they liked to be.
No one is suggesting bringing real bullying back.
Classic Grove.
Fucking hell
