Music thread

I’m upset at my old SD card with the DJ Twit boom bap mixes conked out.

He’s from Bristol but yeah, maybe I should start somewhere else if I’m going down that route of music

Roots Manuva/Rodney P a good starting point maybe for dancehall influenced hiphop

ah yeah sure, sorry thought Hugo was on about a rapper influenced by dancehall. You’d be the man to advise on dancehall

Isn’t Under Mi Sleng Ting the Year Zero of dancehall?

Ah, he said the word Bristol in his interview but I could hardly understand him or the interviewer :joy::joy::joy:

Closest I’ve ever gotten to Dancehall/Reggae was a bit of Yellowman. Probably off the back of a BDP sample iirc

Does this count?

I feel stupid now. My idea of dancehall was so linked to that Casio sound.

HJs do the best mini-reviews of stuff on their site. You can really tell how much they love something if it gets a paragraph or three.

Ah ok - hence the dancehall knowledge. Must’ve been a great place to work.

Bought a lot of good music from them - some of which was waaay off my radar - purely because they’re hyped on it and I’m inclined to blindly trust an HJ recommendation… I can’t really say that about any other record shop tbh.

Album is out if anyone wants to check it out

Streaming it along with some DJ sets tonight from 7.30, playiing 90s electronic / ambient / techno first then more modern stuff later. There’s a chat so say hi or just write N26 or something

A mate of mine who’s older than me turned up at a blues late one night in Sheffield back in the 80s. Hammers on the door, little slot opens. Asks to come in. Geezer on the other side is a bit dubious. ‘But I’ve got Sly and Robbie with me’ he says. Guy on the other side of the door creases up.

Dave stands to one side and gestures behind him to - yep - Sly and Robbie. He’s been looking after them for a few days whilst they were working with Chakk at Fon Studios.

He said the dude at the door nearly fell over in shock

I know I have mentioned it a couple of times but I have started a band with the missus and we’re playing a gig at the World Saxophone Congress on Thursday. Just started up social stuff and setup bandcamp etc.
We had very little time to write the piece so we decided to shortcut and base it on a book we have both read as a starting point.
Be interesting to hear peoples thoughts on it as we have no idea how people with take to it but we’re very happy with it, it’s very much an amalgamation of us.
All feedback welcome, I’d love to hear negative opinions too so if anyone does take the time out, don’t hold back. It’s a bit of a journey so hold out through it if you can, ha.

I might post it in the stoked thread too tomorrow for the people who don’t visit this thread much, unless it’s annoying to do so, ha.

Listening now. I’ve been on a big NWW tear recently and this is right up my street. I love the eerie saxophone over the footsteps.
