Olympics 2024

According to YouGov, 3% of the UK population think they could be skating at the next Olympics. Thought it’d be more tbh.

An absolute no go zone

Now this thing really is a kook magnet.

It’s an in-land surfing centre. The whole place attracts a particular (wealthy) clientele.

They do have a proper mini ramp iirc. I’d happily skate that or surf the wave pool, but surf skating can do one.

It’s got the worst transitions ever unfortunately. Looked like it was going to be great when it was being built…but no.

However, to be fair parking is free and the ramps are free to skate. The cafe has really nice food but it’s absolutely stuffed full of white collar weekend dudes

Today it had the added danger of two year old childs faces at the bit where the flat bottom meets the transition. Full zoomer to face territory. Absolutely clueless.

Ok, scratch the mini ramp sesh then. The wave pool would be worth hitting up though.

It does look like if that other ‘ramp’ was free of little kids on scooters or any of those wobbling surf skate dorks, and if it was treated as if it were just some weird found obstacle that wasn’t designed to be skated, it could be fun for bit.

I’ll go at like 8.30pm+ this week and report back. Its only 15 mins from my house (+the huge walk to get there from the carpark).

The horror

The Wave is very popular with loads of surfers, even more so in summer when it’s been flat for ages. It’s meant to be pretty gnarly on the higher settings and easy to hit your head on the concrete floor.

AI-generated-ass looking skatepark.

I think it’s a great idea to have that, great fun for the average kid who just wants to scuttle about and keep them off the real ramp. However, if that’s all someone built for you then, heads would need to roll.

I’m assuming it was built for these doofuses.

Hopefully it’ll be monopolised by the kiddies instead.

I don’t what it is about surf skates/skaters that irks me so much but they really grate my cheese.

Is the board really difficult to ride or something? Because those surf skate ramps look like such a waste of money.

I’ve stood on one, the front truck is really loose with some weird geometry that makes it way more turny than a normal truck. So not that hard to ride especially, just weird. I don’t know I find them a bit baffling, like longboards I just don’t see what’s meant to be fun about it.

Much like surfing itself then.

I watch them at this place, they catch the wave, they stand up for a bit, they get washed down a bit and…that’s it. Loop back round and do it again.

Surfing will forever be a mystery to me.

Tried surfing in Portugal once and nearly drowned. So much harder than it looks. Never again!

To be fair though that sounds like someone like Noel Gallagher’s criticism of skating, “I watch them try stuff, and they fail, then they try again, I don’t get it”

Mind you I think he’s still a bit salty about Jay-Z playing at Glastonbury

Surfing is rad if you are good.

I am not so tend to just watch the Mrs and I’ll chill.
