Austyn’s going to make me buy a pair of globes isn’t he
Globe owned Gravis, didn’t they? Or have I got that wrong?
Gravis was sick. Why didn’t that work out?
Because no shops sold them.
Yeah, I mentioned in the footage thread that the clip was a Vans footage dump.
Should imagine Globe will announce any day and someone fucked up by going live when making the post.
Bet they’re paying him a fat wedge.
A friend of mine who was getting Globes (who quit for a stupid reason imo) said that Austyn’s got a hand in the direction of the brand, shoe designs, etc so I imagine that he’s getting a good amount of those Aussie dollars
Nope, it was Burton Snowboards, who also bought Alien Workshop and Habitat around the same time, which explained why Arto left Etnies for Gravis.
Burton owned Gravis.
@BvS, they canned the footwear program, changed the direction and made Asia the only market for it. (From the impression I get, it already did well over there.)
They also owned Analog Clothing and dropped the skate and surf teams.
It sucks and I really liked both brands. But as far as I’m aware it all came as part of something as a shift back towards focusing on snowboarding. As massive as Burton is, considering it is – or least was then – still privately and family owned, maybe you can’t knock that move.
If the Van Dorens still directly owned Vans and decided to reel it back in to just skateboarding, I doubt we’d be bummed whilst I’m sure surfers and snowboarders would. Kinda the same deal but Verso’d, I guess.
I’ve still got a load of pairs of Gravis, some Analog jeans, and a few Analog tees too – which are all USA made and have held up very well over the years.
If Vans reeled it back, they’d not sponsor anyone, right? Surf, skate or otherwise.
Did they get into surf at the same time as skate? Feel like skate came first but as it came via surfers, it might be a bit of a grey area.
#tangent
Saw someone mention this on Twitter and thought it was a good point - Nyjah, arguably the highest profile skateboarder on the planet (other than Tony) as well as being probably the highest paid, has no wheel, truck or grip sponsor and his board sponsor is himself.
Nike is his only actually skateboard-related sponsor.
It seems telling that the closest thing we have to an ‘athlete’ doesn’t have any real skateboard sponsors.
"A scarier thought to me, is not that small board companies will take over, it’s that no board companies will take over and your Nyjahs and whoever will just sell Nyjah skateboards direct to the consumer.
Right.
Or they just don’t give a shit. Or, as the big shoe companies do in snowboarding, they just buy out the board. In snowboarding people don’t even ride for the board company, it just has the shoe sponsor’s logo on it. I could totally see that happening. The guys in the Olympics, do they want the Element logo on the bottom or do they want the giant sports brand logo? How much is it worth to them? How much can a board company afford to pay? And again, the shoe companies are just trying to support cool shit happening. They can’t be blamed."
Yeah interesting. I can see the POV if you’re a top level pro with a big 4 shoe contract - do you really need a) the money from a board sponsor and b) the responsibilities that come along with it. Element would have been getting more out of Nyjah than Nyjah from element.
Having said that, it’s weird that someone of Nyjahs level doesn’t even have a truck sponsor. Obviously to skate at his level he needs top level equipment, so someone is giving him bones or thunder etc, it’s just either no ones willing to pay him for it for presumably personal reasons, or he’s made that decision (in part with Nike?) not to rep anyone else?
I thought he was sponsored by ricta. And then he has monster as well, I’d imagine they’d be paying him some wedge each month
Can’t remember seeing that, not that I’ve been paying a great deal of attention in fairness.
Yeah, he’s not on the team page anymore. Not sure how recent
Roberto Aleman’s new board company:
Yikes.
Woah. Could that be the worst graphic ever?
Black boards suck too.
Typical coke user, I bet his line is the fat long one, to his mates shorter thin one… greedy bastards the lot of them.
I find it funny when people walk in with a small baggie like they are Tony Montana but are constantly asking other people for notes so they can snort it. It’s really the worst thing to brag about doing.
