That’s a completely different situation to be honest, sheep are domestic animals not a species that can be wiped out. I’m not with you on this any more.
EDIT: ok bighorn sheep. Ok, I dunno…you were talking about the owners of the sheep going out of business? I’m lost now
Haha, I was around my parents having Sunday lunch and one swooped down grabbing a pigeon in the garden and started to drown it in the fish pond, then peck and pull it apart to the horror of me and my daughter, who had just looked out the patio doors at the same time. Oof.
When people are talking about re-introducing wolves to Scotland, I have to assume they’re Italian wolves, which are about 20-30kg in weight, which are small compared to a Nordic or grey wolf which come in close to 50-60kg and are the same ones you’ve seen take out a bison or caribou in David Attenborough documentaries.
There’s been a few calls here in Ireland recently to re-introduced the Eurasian lynx to the wilds here, mainly to control the sika deer population which regularly feed on saplings and so kill off / slow down many attempts at regrowing native broadleaf forests and woodlands - as an aside, most of the state forests here are sitka spruce, an invasive, fast-growing specias which acidifies the soil around it so there’s no lush undergrowth, which you’d expect to find natively. Personally, I’m all for reintroducing the lynx. More rural and upland trees mean less flooding downriver as trees are the best overall flood defense and anything to get more native trees growing again, which are usually eaten back by grazing animals, such as goats, sheep and deer, which are prey for the lynx.
I get all the ecological arguments, and the need to manage the ecosystem for its own sake. The single thing that really grinds is the stupid fucking hillbilly expression on his face showing how much he enjoys killing the animal. There will be people who do it for a living who also get a buzz from it too but at least it’s their job. He’s a tourist with a high powered rifle who just fancies a day out ending an animals life for the buzz. Fucking lame.
Yeah, Kite’s very rarely go for live prey - they are mostly scavengers that eat carrion, similar to buzzards. You never know though, as it would be difficult to mistake a sparrow hawk for a kite - they are pretty much twice the size!
This is what I always think about hunting, I get all the arguments in favour and agree with loads of them, e.g. that compared to how meat is typically farmed animals bred to be hunted have a much better life and then just one really bad day. But I still can’t get my head around someone killing something for the fun of it.
Yeah, they were reintroduced in Wales and the South and the population has exploded. They are slowly populating northwards and I see them pretty regularly in the Peak District now.
The problem isn’t mainly the type of wolves , it’s the area they cover . Wolves generally can cover 50-1000 miles of land , which in Italy and big continents is fine . Scotland has lots of farms and roaming livestock across its land, let alone ground nesting grouse and their numbers have been in massive decline unfortunately over the last 20 years . Climate change being a big factor .
