I don’t see how Palace using Kate Bush is odd; she’s very English, from a regular background, who changed music and confused people by doing shit on her own terms. Selling millions of records and totally baffling people at the same time. She’s meant to be sound as fuck too.
Yes. I hope it messes with all their followers who just want to hear whatever is the latest soundcloud rapper or whatever it is that’s trending right now. To me, it felt like they were saying “Don’t worry, we still got you too” to people like me.
Didn’t say it was odd, just didn’t work for me. Still a good video though!
Could have done with more Benny, Chewy etc but that’s always the case haha
It’s weird how “coverage” isn’t really a thing anymore, previously it was who was getting in mags and vids, and it kinda legitimised them, now kids can be insta-famous and have thousands of followers, without any actual mag or video coverage.
Take Kyle Wilson for instance, I think I’ve only really seem him on Insta, the guy is incredible but I had no idea who he was sponsored by or anything when I started following him, just that he had a dope style. Now he has a tonne of followers, but I don’t think I’ve seen a photo of him, just picked up he’s on Palace…
Without his own Insta I don’t think I’d have heard of him until he did that switch ollie…
But if you’re good on Insta, not a twat, and stylish, you’ll probably end up quite happily sorted out by a company that you like.
Otherwise, there’s Jart.
Thought that video was pretty nice, some really decent bits in there, tunes fine too.
Everyone seems on a level whereas if it had SP in there it would bring the level down. “jus sayin”
Enjoyed that more than I thought I would.
I’d agree with it needing more Benny / Chewy and I need to do some Da Silva research as his section was ace - that melon! Couldn’t see too much because of the sun, but the sound it made was glorious.
Brady has a sick switch mongo push. Not being facetious, think it’s genuinely stylish.
Exactly that Chas. super stoked on that clip.
He always had a decent amount of footage in Palace vids. Far more than Chewy and Fairfax combined, and he’s the TM!
Did I see an illusion flip in this vid?!?
I’m a big fan of Benny’s skating, his hometown was near to mine so I saw him coming up, anything with his name on sold really well in the shop, but doesn’t feel like he’s had a full video part since Sidewalk… in 2003! Just searching on YT gives loads of bit parts, would have liked to have seen a full part from him since he turned pro.
Yeah definitely, it just seems a bit odd to me, that someones “career” can be based completely on Instagram… (Not saying Kyle’s, just that possibility in general)
Just posted about Benny Fairfax, that he hasn’t had a “proper” part in ages, but these days someone could be a completely legitimate sponsored skater and in theory never have a video part, just put out insta clips…
Its the progression/attrition of skateboarding:
80’s - you have to enter contests to be pro
90’s - you can now be pro, based on video parts
00’s - you can now be pro, based on YouTube parts
10’s - you can now be pro, based on your social media following
You’re completely right, but I can’t be the only one that thinks this sucks?! Definitely wouldn’t call it progression…
The less is more of having pros that only had good footage and photos is lost, and has been replaced by #newlearn and people putting out flatground clips…
Don’t get me wrong, it’s rad seeing guys like Tyshawn that can put out a single trick clip and it’s incredible, he’s one of my favourite new skaters to watch and I haven’t seen a part from him, but I really miss proper videos…
It just means you need to pay more attention to find the stuff that you like. I’m all for it.
I dunno how to explain myself in a small amount of words but I’ll try…
That model of being sponsored/pro works for people like Tyshawn etc who are genuinely amazing, and yeah it’s rad that we have access to seeing that progression straight away, for free! Compare it to something like when Tony Hawk did the 900, it was just a rumour and it was months before we got to see it on a 411 and had to pay £14 for the pleasure…
But the filtering down of it to the next generation is what kinda worries me, kids see that as the model of how you get anywhere in skating, just put out insta clips, and I see kids that are sponsored by local shops that only ever skate their local parks and get clips on a tripod… This used to be the ultimate knobhead thing to do didn’t it?! And now thats apparently good enough to be sponsored, feels like street skating is dying…
I just remember feeling a sigh of relief when I was watching the Blips video, like thank fuck someone is still doing it right…
I know what you mean, but I think it’s creating real segregation in skateboarding (and life in general!). It’s really easy not to expose yourself to things. Or find new ideas etc.
Maybe the whole sponsorship model is dying.
A good point was bought up in that Free interview with the woman about Motherhood in skateboarding etc, how skateboards were filling up with older people skating now and would that push the new skaters into the streets, or just turn them off skateboarding completely?
He did live on ESPN as part of the X-Games.
Looking at Chas’ list of contests->video part->YT parts->social media following, none of these were predictable a decade before, and when they started becoming more popular, they were definitely sneered at by elders happy to preserve the status quo.
Have you seen how downright lame some contests were before Dogtown and the Z-boys came along? It was more like ballet or ice skating, absolutely cringing and a far cry from what skating became (aside from Magenta’s ticktack powerslide performance artist public wanks of fury)
Haven’t read it but skating has definitely lost its dirtbag edge, especially when more parents are able to skate with their kids compared to being embarrassed by their kids skating.
Brady’s footage in the Palace vid was dope. Loved that bs 180 into the bank followed by the cab flip over the hip, perfect mix of doing the right tricks at the right spot and making the line suit the terrain.
