Can anyone try and explain the appeal of surfing to me? I’m from the coast and always just hated it. Pointless floating. I just don’t get it. Once you can stand up and turn that’s basically it isn’t it?
Paging @Load
Ha.
Look I know you can reduce anything really - football is just 22 blokes kicking leather about etc. but you swim out float for a few seconds and then try again over and over again.
It would be like skateboarding for years and years and only doing kickturns on variously sized ramps.
Isn’t surfing more like dropping in again and again mostly?
** Waves **
(No pun intended)
I’m not a big fan either but I think I can answer your question.
It’s because you’re at one with* and able to harness the fundamental forces of the universe (maaan).
*if you exclude the synthetic board, wetsuit and VW Transporter
On a moving ramp that can kill you.
Boring AND deadly.
its Like fishing , all about patience and getting the strike right (catching the wave) followed by the few minutes of reeling in (surf). Then do it all over again . Except you’re in the water with the fish.
I learned to surf whilst travelling, I was useless at the timing and judging the waves. I saw the appeal when people caught a wave next to me but when I got back to the UK I went snowboarding at the local snow dome instead of trekking to cornwall for tiny waves.
Best decision I made .
Yeah the amount of times I got taken by a wave and slammed into a beach , dragged back into the water and thrown about like I was in a washing machine, all whilst trying to get to the surface for air was really keeping my surfing enthusiasm alive.
I think people are starting to miss the point where this all started as joke replies to a stupid comment about skating.
You can definitely do tricks on a surf board. Also it’s really fucking hard to do.
Not for lazy skaters, that’s for sure.
I’m lazy in relation to driving over 2 hours to be able to get to the sea.
I’m not sure what the appeal of surfing is, but I kinda want to be able to do it (especially as I live stones throw from the beach). I’ve messed about with it. It’s kinda fun to be pushed along by the waves, but I haven’t tried standing up on it yet. That is hard as hell for me.
A lefty and a righty.
What else?
My god, your avatar is just perfect
Tried it a couple of times.
I love being in the sea and it’s cool having something to mess around at while in there.
It’s hard work paddling out then there’s the watching the waves for a decent one to try to get in on.
It’s good fun and very hard work.
Getting stood up shouldn’t trouble someone who skates a lot.
There are obvious limits to what you can do when you get stood up at first but that’s for extra learning.
I love surfing, but it’s pretty frustrating as I can’t really progress doing it only 2 or 3 times a year.
Tax code changed so extra hundy a month. Nice.
