Where does PROD rank against Sheckler?
Did Prod benefit from the ‘cooler’ company he kept as a younger skater? Probably. A lot of good skaters maybe didn’t get the shine simply because they didn’t swim in the right circles. He is not in my top 20 (or 100 if I sat down and really thought about it).
After he left the Girl camp for Plan-ZZzzz he almost became irrelevant to me personally. Sure I’d check out a new part or a new clip if someone posted it but I’ve never sort him out or gone back to watch his old parts.
That’s just me personally.
He was also the first (correct me if I’m wrong) new generation pro to quit their stable board sponsor and start their own brand and Primitive shook up the board brands when they first emerged.
Hence my commercial significance comment
Similar status I reckon - Sheckler with more mainstream kudos initially due to the TV show.
Sheckler wins on mental health damage though sadly.
I wish we were all in a pub so I could go over the road to a stationary shop and get an A3 flip board and markers to really dig into why p rod is such an influential character in skating and how he then went on to shoot him self in the foot and destroy his legacy.
But we’re almost home and i need to to tidy my daughters bedroom so you’ll just have to imagine/dismiss as you wish.
I think Sheckler stayed more relevant with the constant Thrasher presence, but again, I can’t remember him having many “full parts” in big videos. Even less so than P-Rod because he had Yeah Right if nothing else. His was all footage in Bust or Bail, Wallenberg or contests; at least of what I saw.
I don’t see “I’d sooner watch Sheckler’s bits in KOTR” catching on as much as the Gino push thing but it stands in this case!
Mate he’s done a lot more than Yeah Right, feel sorry for Paul
“I’d rather watch Gino push” comes straight to mind when thinking about P-Rod.
He literally doesn’t look like he enjoys playing on his skateboard.
Deffo fast forward a P Rod section every time.
Definitely in the PRod is boring and not important camp. What’s his legacy? A shit film… can’t think of anything else hes contributed to the culture. If you don’t count shoes which i suppose is debatable
I started typing my opinion and fat fingers made it disappear…
Prod is certainly in the top 100 influential skaters since 2000. To say otherwise is plain stupid.
He was at the head of a new generation street skaters raised/mastering modern skateparks. His skills were also at the forefront of a peak in skateboarding coverage to the larger public through (new) contests, video games, tv shows and films. All the while he was spearheading nike’s successful infiltration of the shoe market and negotiating deals that got skaters paid properly over the long term. He had an agent helping him. Finally, he was highly influential and innovative on his skateboard with undeniable skill albeit with an unextravagant style. He successfully transitioned from a cursed plan b 2.0 to open his own skateshop turned highly regarded board brand.
It’s great his dad’s a c-list hollywood actor but I don’t think that had any influence on his skate career - anymore than other pro skaters with rich/famous parents. The only way it might have helped was in his acting career.
Wow, tough crowd haha.
If Prod’s not making the cut what does that mean for literally any other skater of his generation?
Fuck me, tough crowd. If he was from the UK you would all be saying how amazing he is.
I know theres more parts, but what a terrible legacy and no one on the entire planet cared about him. (He has credits in 60 parts / videos on SkateVideoSite)
Ok so he has quantity and consistency. Ie a lot of boring footage.
It’s obviously very subjective anyway but for me just never found his stuff v interesting. I don’t really care about the money stuff
Edit i haven’t seen a fair number of those parts so probably unfair but that’s because i haven’t been very bothered about him as a skater
Might have a watch later
Yer I get that you don’t like his style and skateboarding you are entitled to your opinion.
But to say he isn’t top 100 important skateboarders of all time - he has a ridiculous amount of high level skating that hasn’t dropped off across his body of work.
If he was from the UK you would all be saying how amazing he is.
this is like a reverse Sam Allardici and I love it.
Paul Rodgers from county Durham
Again it depends on how you define important. His achievements are impressive but that’s not my criteria
So what makes someone important then?
