In my early days, when one battered copy of Thrasher would do the rounds of everyone in school who skated, I thought of the Alva Boyz as mysterious warriors of cool. Like I knew they must just be the raddest dudes ever, cos they had pro boards and wore leather jackets, but you never actually saw pics of them skating, never mind video.
I remember one particular ad of Chris Cook, who was just riding tuck-knee over a small lump of rock/concrete on the sidewalk near some grass. I thought, wow that’s all they need to show us, he must just be insanely rad. Look how he’s riding over a small lump. What a sick dude.
what about scott oster
remember his munster street run in 1990? I think, his ender was doing a g-turn
so out of his depth
This discussion has tangentalised enormously.
But…if your most influential skaters list doesn’t include big hair and glasses ultra don Steve Olson we can’t be friends.
Also, most influential trick ever:
Fucking loved Scott Oster, had a couple of his decks bitd, all because of that g-turn, and his tiny part in Speed Freaks (?) which also had a g-turn in there. To teenage me he seemed like a stylier Hosoi with none of the arseholeness
We can be friends.
I only ever saw his Speed Freaks section (my first ever skate vid) and his run at Munster so you can imagine how I thought he was just a shit washed up 80’s surf dude
Spelling Wilshire Blvd incorrectly makes it even better.
And backpack, bandanas, glove, chain… Accessorise.
I’m pretty stoked on how muska’s life has gone considering the high potential for him to lose everything.
Skaters today need to do more demos
Hell yes
can you be on the list from one ad alone?
Good question. Probably not.
You got me thinking what would be a career defining photo for a pro skater?
I avoid video part because that gives too much away. So I guess I’m targeting pro skaters pre- youtube era.
First one that comes to mind is Jeremy Wray water tower ollie.
Think carefully. The photo really has to encompass who the pro is and why they differ from anyone else. Not just a rad photo.
Cardiel big SF rail
This is going be an odd one but 1994 many companies were still doing tech there were a few just doing real standard tricks but clean and well and doing longer lines. Scott Johnston showed everyone how to be the cleanest and then sat back. Made a resurgence with the 180 switch crook but I think his influence is there I reckon. Let the horns blow and his 411 3 profile.
Probably showing my own biases a bit but has anyone mentioned Dylan Reider yet?
Yeah but worth mentioning again…
Career defining photo?
Wainwright ollieing the decks.
He literally jumped higher on his skateboard than anyone else on the whole planet.
That is a fucking cool accolade.
I had a moment where something important fell out of my brain the other day and I remembered PJ’s DC shoe for some reason.
