Very cool

Lovely.

Ah amazing.
What price you need to pay to get those pics/views?

Incredible! If I wasn’t such a city slicker I’d totally get into this stuff. My dad loves it.

What’s your setup? I don’t know anything about it but I’m interested to see how it’s done. There’s a good subreddit, some people get amazing shots

Now I need a telescope

Did you sneak in a picture of a grapefruit to troll us?

Well, I’ve got this thing:

But it’s on eBay now, it just takes up too much room and mostly gathers dust because it’s just such a pain to use and the skies here aren’t really dark enough for direct observing of anything but the brightest objects.

All those pictures were taken with this little guy, a Seestar S30:

Small, affordable smart telescopes like this have changed the game a bit recently. Not long ago you’d have needed a scope at least as big as the other one I have, some imaging kit and a lot of time to invest to get the knowledge for these sorts of results. This one works by tracking objects, taking lots of pictures and then stacking them to create images that get clearer the longer you leave it running. There’s really not a lot you need to know other than how to use a phone.

I was a bit worried that I might not like it, though. it’s ridiculously easy and there’s a certain magic and immediacy about looking right at something through a telescope. With this you plonk it down in the garden and sit there on the sofa just watching as the images take shape. Time will tell I suppose, right now I love it though, I never thought I’d be able to take pictures like this from my back garden. And it’s small enough to chuck in the van for trips away in places where the skies are darker.

The IT manager at work has one of those Seestars. He’s well into astrophotography for and has shown me some amazing pictures since I’ve been here.

His one from last weekend’s solar eclipse was great - same as your grapefruit but with a bite out of it.

I shut him up with my telescopes effort though.

Keep yours coming!

Those are a conspiracy to further the globe theory and indoctrine the masses to believe what they tell you is out there. it’s just preloaded photoshop images!
You just can’t see that far with such a small device, people have needed huge telescopes in the past to get those images.

Is what a flat earther would say.

Proper magic man! googles price

Haha! I did that too.

Can’t add to cart quite yet.

Complete no brainer, it’ll pay for itself in no time.

I’m really tempted. Nights spent pissing around in the cold with me and my son’s dobsonian, trying to balance a table out…

Managed to get the Orion Nebula last night before it gets too low in the sky until after summer really.

Need to get into taking hours of data and then stacking on the PC for more detail but I was pretty blown away by this considering it was already really low in the sky.

incredible!

Orion is absolutely massive and bright as these things go. You can see it with nothing if you have a dark sky once you know where to look. Well worth just looking at with some binoculars too.

Another plus for that countryside retreat with no light pollution.
