Again, I don’t think you’re right. I’m talking about before Toy Machine who constantly had to find a new team as they were almost a stepping stone company with their team leaving every other week. And I don’t think cutting about naked at that time was a bad thing as a bunch big children had literally just taken over the industry. From what I’ve read or watched, though, nobody liked him and nobody wanted to acknowledge him. I think he’s a dick and so totally understand why that might’ve been. Ed Templeton obviously likes to go his own way, being an artist. Like how he’d have loved to have BA come out way back when. I’ve no idea what you mean by Cole’s Cole. I’m Roddy. You’re you.
Snurp I actually thought the tern came from surf/skate culture, like sketchy. I thought it was our word.
So you’re talking about when he first turned up in SF, camping out at the EMB pissing off the locals? I’d be pissed off too if some random just turned up and was ruining it by being there for everyone else. Bit of a dick move. Plus the EMB lot weren’t the most welcoming people in the world to start with. He did get on Invisible though, before Toy. So again doors weren’t that closed off to him.
I don’t think I’m an expert on Jamie Thomas’ career but I doubt you are either, but essentially what I’m talking about is having a sense of ownership within skateboarding, thinking it belongs to you, is a really bad thing. The locals at EMB were basically a bunch of wee ‘locals only’ neds. I’m not going to try and defend Jamie Thomas though because regardless of what did or didn’t happen to him (even though I understand there were people trying to close doors but that doesn’t mean everyone did. I’m not trying to suggest that every single person in the industry is an arsehole, just that lots of them are/were) as far as I understand, he’s just as guilty. From what I know if I were at a session on a rail with a photographer and Jamie Thomas were there, if I did a trick down the handrail and the photographer shot it, he’d just do the same trick right in front of me straight afterwards because I’m beneath him and he knows his trick would be the one that would get published. He’s a twat. I’m not sure why you want to argue with me about this. All I’ve said is that I think there would’ve been lots of pros who made it through the cracks because there would’ve been cracks, like I say, not everyone tried to keep people out. But that was a thing, of that I’m certain.
I’m not argue with you just trying to work out the context to comments being made (even if just a part of it) about people not being allowed in to the industry.
My thinking is - Well let’s break down that comment and see what really happened than just saying the gatekeepers wouldn’t allow JT to have a career. It’s all their fault and leave it like that to be repeated as the truth throughout the ages. Not arguing, just digging around for a little perspective on what really went down on both sides.
