SOTY thread

I mean technically,
but the current owner seems to have the best intentions and bought it from the guys that sucked the soul out of it, no?

I just typed tj rogers into youtube and was reminded that he’s released 4 solo parts, a life style/skate part with Penny and this shared part with Alexis ramirez.

His argument for soty is pretty strong but I cant help but feel he’ll get snubbed again because his output wasnt exclusively to thrasher or dlx brands. Are his shoes out? I’d get a pair to support the man. Nb have enough of my money.

He did quite a long tour promoting his new shoe back in September, even visited Rollersnakes and did a Brain Drain. They’re a bit too bulky for me to skate in. Edit: Yes.

First few winners were all transition skaters

Yeah Hawk and Danny Way, Way won iit twice too, the second time (2004) for basically mega ramp skating in the DC video right?

Danny Way was pretty ATV the first time around.

Yeah but what he was doing on vert really stood out at the time (for me anyway). Bob won it too. let’s not forget.

Here’s an idea: Break the Thrasher monopoly on skate awards. If the bunt didnt have real jobs, they’d be worthy of handing out awards.

Nothing is going to break Thrasher’s monopoly until print media dies completely

Didn’t TWS have their own awards that no-one took any notice of? I feel like Trick Of The Year is one of the only things outside of SOTY that gets a bit of traction.

Tws awards were kind of a big ish deal I guess but none of those awards were really pushed until social media and the internet meant they could be monetised.

There was tws and kingpin for europe.

I dont think you need a physical magazine to push an award. Podcasts have enough following and audience engagement to do something.

Maybe yeah I just think that the only reason for doing them in the post smartphone era is to monetise them through sponsorship, engagement etc so they’re necessarily bullshit to some degree.

This Jim Craven photo form Gabbers’ Vague interview is so amazing

I still reckon it’ll go to Kevin Baekkel, he’s the most “Thrasher” skater of the lot.

This is obviously old man shouting at clouds… but Lakai, whilst shit in its later years, definitely has a place in skateboarding’s history and that place is as “Rick and Mike’s shoe company” and the company that made Fully Flared…

I guess my feeling is if you wanna throw money into a shoe project, make it something new, rather than trade on the fumes of former glory that is nothing to do with whatever carcass you purchased.

Think so yeah. Moshers recognize moshers.

Surely it’s got to be Joslin. Been following his Barca sessions via Winkle on YouTube and I feel like he’s gonna drop a part so heavy it’ll just win it for him no question.

Yeah and that tre flip cover sort of confirms it too. Hhhmmmm…

I’d like Antonio to win it, but I’d prefer it if Thrasher gave to Joslin because I feel like SOTY is a bit tainted now and a bit of a gross association to have with your name.
