The Book Thread

^ deffo worth a read if you haven’t already.

I just finished The Last Emperox by John Scalzi, ace space opera with swearing.

Now reading a book I’ve forgotten the name of but which is amazing so far, all about broken families and addiction in Philadelphia, wrapped in a serial killer mystery.

That whole series was so great. Dumb as shit but so much fun.

Some of the best cussing in any book ever.

Old Man’s War is good if you enjoyed that. A bit more ‘serious’ if you can call anything by Scalzi serious. Starship Troopers and Forever War vibes.

Aye I’ve read the first two or three Old Man’s War books, also great. Yeah just such fun - I love the way that he basically dispenses with the Flow science by saying ‘I could explain it but you wouldn’t understand, so here’s some more swearing and scheming’.

An awful lot of sf is just badly written po faced misogynist shit, loving him and Adrian Tchaikovsky at the moment.

I’ve heard Forever War mentioned a few times recently but not read it, need to get on it I think.

One of the locals at the Backwoods vert ramp has written a book about acting. Work, by Joseph Millson. Might be worth a look

Worst. Pitch. Ever.

Yeah, probably so - but he’s a good actor. Most recently he was Uhtred’s evil uncle in Netflix’s Last Kingdom. And his skating has really taken off this last year

On the subject of worst pitches ever, here’s how a Scottish local paper, the Buchan Observer, reported Trump’s victory a few years back

^ Book Thread no need for politics. I’m trying to be nice to you @Warwick outside of the bullshit thread. What’s your vert friends book about? Becoming an actor?

Just finished a load of MMA / Boxing books, GSP, Tyson, Bisping, PVZ if anyone wants to do some swaps.

Yep - it’s a sort of funny take on the good and bad things about becoming an actor

The last post wasn’t meant to be about politics- that was just to show how people make bad pitches by looking at things through the wrong end of the telescope. Nothing more intended - and certainly not for the sake of an arse like Trump.

ABP when the joke was first made by the Ayrshire Post years ago and totally irrelevant for this thread.

I read this a while back. Better-written than you might think (he has a ghostwriter, I think - it says ‘with Sean Mortimer’) and a really interesting insight into a man whose whole life has revolved around skating

I’ve read it, but what makes you say that?

I found it a great read, and to produce something like that takes a lot of skill and practice. Gifted sportsmen aren’t always gifted writers - imagine David Beckham writing a book. I like Hawk - he’s put a lot back into the sport. When I busted my pelvis and couldn’t skate he’d just recovered from the same injury. I emailed him and he sent a really encouraging message back.

He’s a top bloke actually. I’ve chatted to him before as well.

This is a really really good book.

Maybe we can talk about Tony Hawk and never Brexit.

What’s wrong with David Beckham writing a book? Have you seen how well he has done for himself? Why cite him as an example as he’s clearly not stupid.

Yep, went from being the most hated person in England to captaining the country. Now that’s a story worth reading!

I don’t care about football but it sounds like this guy has got quite the story, and I want to know more.

Me too, Beckham is an easy target for ‘thick, sports person’ … which is utter laziness these days and a time capsule of Warick’s cultural references. He probably still does Les Dennis’s ‘Mayvis’ ‘Well I don’t really know’ too.
