The Book Thread

I probably read Nineteen Eighty Four once a year. It’s scary how prescient a lot of it was. Just be careful you don’t fall down a dystopia rabbit hole and end up depressed…

Huxley was more on the money I reckon but it’s not as well written

I dunno, all the stuff about propaganda, doublespeak, constant fear of ‘the other’… It’s not exactly as written, but pretty close to the bone.

Yeah true, I haven’t read it in ages.

We have always been at war with Europa

Agree, you can tag any of today’s social problems to ideas in that book.

I posted this before on the old forum but it’s worth another go

Interesting… I like that. Might need to reread Brave New World.

I feel like this forum is sending hidden messages. messages to shop a Legacy Skate Store

I like this. A lot.

I warn you it is nowhere near as captivating and well written as Orwell… though the ideas are spot on

Nah I have read it years ago, might have to do them both back to back with Fahrenheit 451. There was quite a good R4 dramatisation of Brave New World a while back if I recall.

Hi. I’m a fiction writer and publisher. I recommend writing in Scrivener (https://www.literatureandlatte.com/ - Mac/pc), formatting for print and/or digital in Vellum (https://vellum.pub/ - Mac) and uploading your files through KDP (https://kdp.amazon.com/) and grabbing a badass cover from https://www.goonwrite.com/. Yeah ive read Brave New World a few times. But never got around to 1984 till now. It does seem a lot more depressing. Only up to the end of chapter 3 so far.

I’ll do my best not to top mysellf before the end!

I liked the themes in Brave new world, and ill have to reread it after i think

Calm down, I’m just being helpful to a writer. :grinning: And yes I skate. Nice place here. :+1:

Aaaah sorry I thought you were a bot of some kind. Apologies and welcome!

It’s just excellent. Don’t look up anything about it…just turn your telly off and read it.

I’ve never been that big on biographies so I can’t really help there. Read a good one on The Clash a while back, and I have a Leonard Cohen one waiting on the shelf.

Recent(ish) loves have included China Mieville (probably my new favourite author, no idea how he passed me by for so long), Nobber by Oisin Fagin, The Last by Hanna James, Savages by Don Winslow and a bunch of other stuff.

I also discovered that I now find Terry Pratchett a bit dull which is weird because I used to love him.
