Adblock on your browsers = job done.

I have paid youtube. Seems to be worth it as we have android TV so kids don’t get all the toy ads. Also YT music is free so have cancelled spotify.

With adblock on browserI occasionally came up with problems and had to reload. That was a coupleyears ago though, so maybe they fixed it

XDM is a good, open source project for this kind of thing. Quite mature as well, i used it for exactly same thing not long ago.

While we’re on the subject has anyone ran YouTube ads with any degree of success?

My clients have them but the ads always seem to go on the same 100 mega sized channels no matter what targeting I do.

Luckily my clients only care about views not conversions so this isn’t a problem.

Do you have to use position based attribution to see any view through conversions?

I updated Instagram and it’s rubbish, you can’t crop vertical videos like you used to. How can I sort this out? Am I missing something with this new version? I could reinstall the older version I had but I don’t have it backed up in my Mac and therefore don’t know how to do it. Thanks.

Just updated mine and it seems fine. I can press the little button in the corner of a video and change between vertical and square. Is that what you mean?

Whilst on the subject of IG, how do you change the background colour on a Story post?
I used to be able to select a colour, then tap and hold on the background and it would fill. Now when I do that, it fills - but over the top of the image/video!

Anyone on here good with After Effects and has the time to help for a good cause?

@ciaran Thank you again for all your help (and all you others that helped) - computer arrived today and have set it up.

Just one last question, which I’m sure I understood before but now wondering… I have 3 x SSDs and 1 regular drive for achiving. The first SSD I have windows installed, so do I install Davinci/Elements on a second SSD, then have the Cache files go to the 3rd one? Or install Davinci on the Windows drive? If that’s the case I’m unsure what the extra drive is for?

I think I’ve just answered my own question ha, but can you please confirm?

Nice one! So set it up like this -

  • C - Windows/all your programs, plug-ins, etc.
  • D / Biggest SSD - all your current projects
  • E / next biggest SSD - make a folder called Cache. In Premiere, DaVinci, Photoshop and whatever similar program that creates cache or scratch files, you’ll point the program here to create the cache files. In Premiere, you have to do it for every new project you set up. For After Effects and PS, it’s just once. When it starts to get full, just delete the subfolders - the apps will rewrite these cache files at a later stage.
  • F / SSD if you’re not running all your current work out of Dropbox or any similar cloud service, back up your current work to this drive
  • G - Archive - store all your old projects here, copy them (or subfolders) when needed to your Current Projects drive.

Run CCleaner and TreeSize every now and again to delete old unwanted clutter and work out what’s filling each drive

I can change between vertical and square but can’t crop vertical videos (which are bigger than the 1080 x 1350 Insta format) how I want and used to, Insta now does it auromatically.

you using an android based device? insta did the same shit to me a few updates back and i found no fix. the only one i could really think of would be if your device was rooted and you installed an older version of instagram.

IM guessing here, but I think it might be due to trying to get all vertical videos to play as reels, which trap the user in an autoplay algorithmic nightmare.

I have seen people add an image in a second slide to stop their video from becoming a reel.

Using an iPhone. Can’t install an old version I’m afraid.

Yeah I think them brians over at Insta want me to post reels. Fuck that. I found a free app that seems to be alright for cropping vids how I want. I’ll try to post a vid this weekend.

Perfect - another clear/concise explanation, thank you mate!!

C: SSD I have Windows installed and will install editing software on that, along with any other programmes.
D: SSD - I will save create/save projects.
E: SSD - Will make a folder called Cache and point to that through Davinci/Elements.
F: Regular Hard Drive - I will backup and archive (So your G pointer included on that - as only 4 drives)

This should be okay?

I’ll also install CCleaner and TreeSize to delete old files!

I have had a quick go with Davinci and can’t believe the difference, and that was with Cache as default.

All good! Yep, that’s fine what you’ve mentioned there.

One other thing to bear in mind is to back your stuff up! Even if it’s a cloud service like Dropbox, it’ll get you out of jail in a hurry should shit hit the fan.

Yep, I had some basic avid software years back and a project just went blank after putting it together for a good week or so - learned my lesson but always appreciate being reminded.

I’ll backup on the F drive but also have portable drives - maybe on one of those to be double safe. Not sure if that’s common practice to do 2?

I’d think about getting a decent NAS, maybe a Synology or something. As well as having mirrored RAID on mine it also replicates to Backblaze just in case.

Will look into that

Starting to see some interesting arguments in open-source projects too

Nerds, make sure you’re pinning all your versions!
