Why would he give two shits about that though?
The ‘standard skate industry’ is pretty cringe a lot of the time too with obvious exceptions.
He’s gone from skating in a shed in rural Ireland to getting flown round the world for free and getting paid for skating.
Good for him.
Yeah agree with anon. I like that he has his own little weird thing.
Same as Andy Anderson and Todd falcon. Some people just exist in their own world.
It would be nice if he didn’t try to pander to conventional skating standards and made some shed equivalent of the mega ramp.
I don’t think his street video parts are genuinely a ploy to try and intergrate with the conventional skate world. I think he just go the opportunity to move to a big city and got to skate stairs and ledges like he always wanted to.
But years of stationery skating on a coffee table in a shed has left his skate trick brain mentally stunted.
Yeah but he’s conventionally still considered a joke and is openly mocked by most.
He’s definitely accepted in some circles but is a really divisive character as a whole.
Edit- mocked and divisive for being a circus trick skater, like falcon and griffin.
I agrée that AA is in a different category but yeah he is openly mocked by the ‘traditional skate industry’.
I’ve been at a fair few events where MCs have slagged him off.
Tim O’Connor is notorious for it but then he is a tit.
See also the fact that he will never win a mainstream contest even if he deserves to.
And helmet diss
I think, like griffin, he seems pleasant enough and he’s really great at skating but yeah, he is definitely considered a gimmick skater.
Before etnies I don’t think he had a legit shoe sponsor and I remember when he did get on there was a lot of talk of ‘Christ, pandering to the pre teens on YouTube much?’
To expand; if he does have one of the highest selling boards, that’s a Powell board that’s probably selling online direct from their website via his many YouTube vlogs. Or in zumiez, to pre teens watching those vlogs.
Powell have massive selling power but that’s because they’re shifting crazy numbers to decathlon type shops and zumiez, to sell to pre teens. Nothing wrong with that, but like the jamie griffin argument, it’s not appealing to the average skater. It’s another world, vlog world, borderline revive skateboards world
The thing is, I think in 2023 that is the average skater and people who care about stuff like we all do are in the minority.
I bet more people buy Revive boards than buy Thrasher. EDIT: I’m not making judgements on it but I reckon the Overton window has shifted hugely in the direction of Shrock, AA etc
I’m not sure if it’s the minority just yet, maybe half and half- but I definitely feel like these years are the tipping point.
I wish we were all in a pub in Farringdon having this chat. I miss you Ben!!
It’s hard to tell in the UK really. I’ve never seen a revive or braille deck. I have seen a lot of AA Powell decks though - always older blokes who restarted in the pandemic
Anyway, back on topic, no fan of Griffin and his part is weak sauce
Views on your favourite mag or companies YouTube releases Vs what Revive, etc. do will tell you all you need to know.
Or your favourite skater with 75k followers vs Rando Swiss Tech Lords on four times that.
Michael Buble is a good singer. he makes pop music for Canadians and housewives. apparently that’s a big demographic. he is not a rapper and probably doesn’t need to be compared to Gang Starr
Jamie Griffin is a good flatground skater. i don’t think he is a good street skater (especially for a pro).
not sure we need comparison thing
@Barf the noseslide 270 was so fucking bad that i wonder if it was a deliberate joke. in BATB finals he did loads of bullshit 360s because he clearly can’t do them properly. maybe this was poking fun at that? either that or he and everyone involved in that part have absolutely zero quality control.
