There was shitloads going on. That Magenta video came out in 2013, same year as 11th Hour and the first Bronze video. Cherry came out the next year. It’s not like when there were only three TV channels and there’s nothing else on. What’s the problem with different things happening at the same time? This is pure old man shouts at cloud shit.
I didn’t say it was the only thing going on. I was just pointing out that that specific type of simple, low impact skating which @anon28148673 mentioned did get popular for a while.
I’m not going to Google it but I CANNOT allow myself to believe that’s true.
Cherry feels so much more recent than that. An entire generation recenter almost
Completely agree. We did this so many times at SS20. Mon the king of the off the cuff event.
Also low impact skating post Magenta, really suited my style - I was almost good.
That night was so much fun!
But the areas you mention were all being expanded upon. Innovated. As you rightly mention.
Frontside flips were a trend after Penny (and Shipman) showed the world how to do them. And that got expanded upon.
Kerb skating was slappy frontside 5050s until a few years ago. Now slappy frontside 5050s are being done on waist high ledges.
The maddest tech is being done on kerbs and it is something no one saw coming.
Ride on grinds opened spots up.
Powerslides are being done at speeds you wouldn’t dare powerslide at.
The level is madder than ever and being pushed in more directions than ever whereas maybe in the 90s it felt like there was a little more focus on one thing for a little longer (see: my frontside flip mention above).
@jimo is really on the money here. Pre GX1000, all we had was an old Bones Brigade video with TG burning down the avenues. Or Sean Young in the rain. Kinda.
Those lot have pushed bombing hills to a level most can’t touch.
And whilst that was going on, there were crews and companies pushing in other important directions simultaneously. Even if it was to a low level, it opened ideas up for smarter and more talented skaters to build on.
I think you’ve gotten “the influence of media” the wrong way round here.
I do get it is a little bit ‘chicken and egg’ as to who came first - but love it or hate it - it is the skaters who dictate direction and push and if they can’t up that stair count, then the push comes from what is accessible to them physically or geographically, be it a mini ramp, a kerb or a double kink handrail.
It’s all the same.
It’s all evolution.
The best time for skateboarding is right now.
Always has been. Always will be.
Progression and trends come in waves and always come around again and again. If people were’nt allowed to regress and dip back into history and bring things back then we’d only have a very narrow view of what is allowed and possible. Going over already done idea again and again in waves and cycle is a great and healthy way to explore avenues that were’nt explored provious times around. Old ideas with fresh eyes breeds fresh progression.
So yeah, things seem to regress at times but it’s only to build up another fresh branch of progression.
Comforted to think that at some point in the future pressure flips will be the shit
And I will patiently wait for this moment
Agree but need to give Danny Sargent the props for doing backside slappies on the high ledge at Embarco in 1990 ish?
Last trick in here. Also this guy gets virtually no props and was charting the future of skate trends 30+ years ago.
I was always a Danny Sargent fan. Loved his Schmitt deck with the monkeys and bananas on it. Had a couple because of its banging rocker.
Saying Danny Sargent and Schmitt…
Candles and bubble bath wankathon over danny Sargent is long overdue.
Can anyone remember where the Danny Sargent ethos of ‘front truck lock in or it doesn’t count’ was documented. I can’t remember if he describes it in a video, advert or interview?
Whenever I see people do slappy smiths without getting the front truck up first I always shed a tear for Danny.
Weren’t Howard Cooke and Joel O’Connor in a band called Danny Sargent too?
It was in his CBI interview.
Alright Danny, lets start this off with a trick tip from the master: in your own words, what’s the secret to a good slappie?
‘’You gotta crash into it, man. Make sure your trucks are kinda loose, get some speed and just crash into it. Smash it down. And remember, you gotta hit your front truck first or it’s not really a slappy. A slappy is front truck then back truck. It’s not really a slappy if you ride up the curb with your back wheels.’’
Idk. It if they weren’t, they should have been, haha.
Hmm might get that quote framed to sit on the desk at work
I choose to believe the myth that he ground down a set of trucks to the axle in 1 day.
Seems kind of appropriate seeing as the photo of the ground to shit truck I posted was one of Danny’s that sat on Fausto’s desk for years.
