It was just a particular look or style, maybe it was check me out, maybe it was just wanting to look like other skaters and fit in, either way it hardly lasted that long and was pretty much never seen in 411 videos. Just because some people wore ridiculous clothes many years ago doesn’t make the current insta generation any less embarrassing or narcissistic.
I’m always careful about simply saying everything were better in my day but I’d agree that many old 411s are superior to a lot stuff that comes out now. Even the ads were pretty funny at times, you don’t really get much of that stuff now, Weckingball aisde.
Things were a bit more independent then I suppose. That’s one bad thing about big business being involved, mags can’t run sketchy shit any more in case the advertisers get upset.
The current insta generation isn’t just in skateboarding though it’s across the board.
Social media has changed everything, people can dress/look how they want and its acceptable.
Also the narcissism is the norm now as most people feel the need to post everything they do online.
Personally I rarely post a photo/clip of myself on instagram as I would feel weird doing it but it is completely the normal thing to do now.
And the good thing is that you can pick and choose whose output you want to see. You can tailor your Insta experience to only seeing the stuff from accounts you care about it.
exactly, the sheer amount of stuff that is out there now is unreal and as a kid I could never imagine having this much media to consume.
Now you can just watch handrail chompers or people skating bowls in 80’s style if you want and that’s rad.
I do miss full lengths coming out and watching the whole thing, even the sections that I wouldn’t necessarily choose to watch these days just because I was hungry to see more new skating.
Kind of like being able to pick certain songs to listen to on youtube now instead of listening to the full album because you’ve paid for the CD.
I love that full lengths are as good as they are now, because they have to be. The constant exposure to skate media has bumped the overall standard and creativity up so much more than monthly mags/videos ever could.
I’m happy to be in a world where we get to see Tiago’s back tail while the ledge is still warm.
I think its gone beyond that for a lot of people now, its almost as if its just the normal way to do things now.
Taking a photo of something and uploading it before eating it is an example I see a lot.
I used to think people who do stuff like this are crazy but maybe its just the normal thing to do now.
I could be cynical and say certain things were done with motive but I won’t because I don’t think they were and I like him. Others might have a more critical moan.
